1977 Cherokee Chief Project Begins...

Glad to see you're diving right into this (y)
Thanks! Diving into the rabbit hole for sure. Finding out that the snowball risk of “while we’re in there” decisions are real! LOL!
I am really excited to see this build! I had the near exact same Jeep as my first bought vehicle. It was a 1978 with the 360. Same color and Levi Edition. What an awesome project Tony!! Keep those pictures coming!!
Thanks! I bet your '78 Cherokee was a memorable Jeep! Will definitely keep this thread going as long as I can or until I run out of money! Hehehe.
is it done yet ? I think it belongs on the old iron trail ride. Close enough !
Still trying to figure out which end of the wrench to use. ;)
Looks like a fun project. You're in Apple Valley now?
It's making me question all my life choices, which is always a good time. The Jeep currently lives at my mom's house in Apple Valley...
I replaced the turn signal switch on my CJ-5 several times. They seemed to be made from really weak plastic, and I must have bumped the turn signal lever on the
way in or out of the vehicle.
Yeah, these fragile Jeep parts were designed with their own unique quirks.
The 1977 Cherokee Chief has been a dream vehicle for me since 1977! 🤣 now if it was yellow!
LOL! Do I know you? You need to get your old iron project going too!
He's a long time lurker first time poster...haha
No kidding! Wonder if he still owns a Jeep!
This is very cool Tony, let me know if you need any help with fabrication or welding😳😂😂😂
I know a guy!
Thanks pal! Fortunately, this Jeep doesn't need any welding — does your guy have grinding skills?!
Holy shit 2 lurkers in one day!...haha
On the same day no less! Must be a full moon!
This thread is bringing back some very good memories for me.
That's awesome Tom! If you're bored, I can use some help!

2 tilt column assemblies, tailgate window regulator, head light bezel, timing chain cover, wheel hub covers, 2 quadratrac transfer cases, starters, power steering gear and pump, and a radiator.

Just some of the bits and pieces I found in the shed.

I'm sure there's more crap to be found but the spiders were not happy with me disturbing their domain! Lol

I thought I was bad with collecting Jeep parts but my dad was way worse.

Oh and I think I found a color match for the carpet.

Hey all,
While going through my dad’s old Jeep parts stash, I found two spare taillight assemblies with 1157 taillight bulbs that each have a 2-wire pigtail attached. At first I thought they were for trailer lights, but when I pulled the taillights off my ’77 Cherokee Chief, I realized it has the same setup — pigtail bulbs wired into the housing, with the harness tucked inside the assembly.

Has anyone seen this before? Was this a common workaround for bad sockets, or some aftermarket solution from back in the day? Hard to believe this came from the factory.

Janky trailer wiring most likely

was it flat towed?
Use to see that as a flat tow solution to wire the tow vehicle to the vehicle being towed, easy way to have brake and taillights.
Run a couple of wires down each side of the towed vehicle and plug them in

That makes perfect sense! The Jeep was never flat towed while my dad owned it but maybe the previous owner had planned to flat tow it at some point. Really appreciate the info — I'm calling this mystery solved! I'll sleep good tonight. 😂
