Recovery gear/kits for beginners

What's a good starter recovery kit to carry for the daily driver jeep..thanks

Thanks...I thought I saw this once before...but i couldn't find the thread...lol

For sake of attempting to recover a non jeep or 4x4 with recover points I also carry a J-hook. It allows you to create a tow point using most holes in the frame or unibody. I was going to get an RTJ cluster but was told by the guy I bought it from that the J-hook would work in 90% of situations and takes up less space.
I would get a soft shackle long before I got a j hook.

Personally, I’ve gotten a lot of use out of 2 tug straps, 4 bow shackles (of which 2 are mounted to the rear bumper my jeep) 4 soft shackles and 2 bow shackle adapters that fit in the trailer hitch. I also carry a shovel and a bottle jack with a base plate, safety adapters and extensions.

As I don’t have a winch, I don’t carry a tree saver or any blocks. Maybe I should in case someone comes along with winch without them.

Not sure how you could attach to a car frame with a soft shackle. The J-hook just gives you a way to create an attachment point for a tow strap or winch if you can't attach the hook anywhere. Tow truck drivers use them all of the time.
Tow truck drivers also use chain and steel cable. Doesn’t mean it’s best for off-road recovery.

Yes there are safer methods out there but if done correctly it can still be done safely. Jerking, yanking, snatching, etc is a good way to do it wrong unless the equipment you are using is designed for that. I wouldn't be yanking on a j-hook, soft shackle, or any type of cable. Slow and smooth all the way.

While this isn’t cheap, it’s a good start and convenient way the bag.

^^^^ Good kit

I was able to build nearly the same kit al la carte and save a bunch of money. I just checked Amazon for "open box" or "damaged" stuff and got individual pieces for nearly half price, most of it the packaging was water damaged or had been torn open and taped back shut.

I have no complaints with my ARB stuff. The snatch strap and tree saver get used all the time but I've only ever needed the winch extension strap once while snow wheeling, no one was willing to drive down the hill where the guy with the most power and biggest tires was buried. The extension strap paid for itself in that one use, no one else had anything close to reaching. Ended up with my winch spooled out completely, the 60 foot extension and a 20 foot strap the stuck guy had.

My other most used piece is a 2" x 3 foot "Shorty strap" from Factor 55, its great for going around roll bars, frames, bumpers, axles and even fished it through a 2" receiver hitch.
