Recovery gear/kits for beginners

What's a good starter recovery kit to carry for the daily driver jeep..thanks

Thanks...I thought I saw this once before...but i couldn't find the thread...lol

For sake of attempting to recover a non jeep or 4x4 with recover points I also carry a J-hook. It allows you to create a tow point using most holes in the frame or unibody. I was going to get an RTJ cluster but was told by the guy I bought it from that the J-hook would work in 90% of situations and takes up less space.
I would get a soft shackle long before I got a j hook.

Personally, I’ve gotten a lot of use out of 2 tug straps, 4 bow shackles (of which 2 are mounted to the rear bumper my jeep) 4 soft shackles and 2 bow shackle adapters that fit in the trailer hitch. I also carry a shovel and a bottle jack with a base plate, safety adapters and extensions.

As I don’t have a winch, I don’t carry a tree saver or any blocks. Maybe I should in case someone comes along with winch without them.

Not sure how you could attach to a car frame with a soft shackle. The J-hook just gives you a way to create an attachment point for a tow strap or winch if you can't attach the hook anywhere. Tow truck drivers use them all of the time.
Tow truck drivers also use chain and steel cable. Doesn’t mean it’s best for off-road recovery.

Yes there are safer methods out there but if done correctly it can still be done safely. Jerking, yanking, snatching, etc is a good way to do it wrong unless the equipment you are using is designed for that. I wouldn't be yanking on a j-hook, soft shackle, or any type of cable. Slow and smooth all the way.
