Show off your guitars

My 6 y/o is showing some interest in guitars so I was thinking of picking up a Mini... I really don't want to spend more than $150. We went to Guitar Center today and they had the Fender mini, a Mitchell and an Ibanez. He liked the Mitchell but it looked kind of cheap.... and the reviews I read on these minis all complain about the tuners. If you could do it again would you still get the Fender? Is it really worth it.. or is it better to have the kid play on a full size guitar and grow into it?

The pink Squire Mini was her first electric guitar. Her first guitar was a Cordoba Requinto 580 (still have it). Ended up with the Mini because it captured her interest, so she wanted to play more. I went in knowing that it was going to require tuners/machine heads and put them in before she even used it. Once upgraded it's not a bad little guitar. Six years later it remains the cheapest, yet one of the most used guitar in the house. Lol.

I would suggest just getting any inexpensive guitar that captures your son's interest. If he digs it and sticks with it, then spend a little more for quality. Be careful though, even if you don't play it's a slippery slope.

Looking back on Amazon, in 2012 I paid $70 for the guitar and $48 for the tuners, so I guess they weren't more expensive than the guitar after all. In the event you go that route, they're still available on Amazon, and cheaper now than what I paid for them in 2012. They are Grover 133N6 Deluxe 6 in Line Machine Heads.

Did a thorough cleaning on my 1996 Ibanez RX40 (bought new in 96... it was all I could afford).. Removed all signs of rust, polished the body, cleaned the neck, re-stringed & tuned. Ready to shred.

I’m going to continue cleaning up a few of my guitars and make them more accessible to him... while also trying to teach him some basics... If he continues to show interest, I’ll pull the trigger on the Fender and do the tuner swap like you did.... thanks for the tips. [emoji1417]

Saw him at the Gorge in George this last summer opening for Dave Matthews. He ended up coming out to play with DMB and Warren Haynes stole the show.

Found these under the tree at my daughters house Christmas morning.IMG_0424.jpgIMG_0427.jpg

Lovely guitars in this thread. Here’s a recent acquisition of mine. It’s not a white falcon (a dream guitar of mine) but it’s still a lot of fun to play and I’m fond of orange.
