Could someone please at their convenience take a photo of their front diff where driveshaft yoke enters the diff? See attached photos.

That ring that looks to me like a dust shield? is what I am trying to see if normal. Item #9 in diagram below.


My Rancho skid plate got hit which bent it pretty good, and that u clamp that holds the rear of the skid around the diff was pushed back and riding on that #9 piece. (ring) I removed the skid, and that ring spins by hand and is not 'seated' in the diff. Is it supposed to be? Can't be a seal because there is no fluid anywhere and not leaking. Anyone know?

Pretty sure our JT has the same axle. It looks just like yours however, that piece doesn't move at all, it stays put. Our JL has the smaller axle and that piece is also there, but it is pushed in much more and almost flush with the cast iron housing.

Thank you for reply! I think the only thing it does is protect the seal. I have tried to look for diagrams showing part names and am not having any luck.
I can push it in flush like your photo, however it has resistance and pops right back out like there is a spring pushing on it. Hopefully someone here can identify it and shed some light.

Its the seal protector... This winter I changed pinion yokes this on mine & the new one doesn't have the guard. The stock one was pressed on the pinion (lightly I'm sure). If its moving around in there I would get rid of it if possible without damaging the seal.
