Working from home

My wife works at home and it's a love/hate feeling with her. A nice perk is she can take an hour or more every day to take our 2 huskies to the dog park to let them swim and run aroundduring lunch.

Wife and I both work from home. I do like the freedom it presents if we want to go out for a hike or kayak in the middle of the day (we live across the street from a river and down the road from a great hiking spot) but I miss the working in a large office with lots of different people to interact with on a daily basis. I transitioned from working in downtown San Francisco and San Jose to rural at home office about a year ago. Being that we just had a baby two months ago it's pretty rad being home with him all the time and not having to do daycare. I agree that having your own "office space" in the home with a door that closes is key although I do enjoy working in sweats after 15+ years of button downs and slacks.

Dunno how I missed this thread, but I started working from home part time about a year ago. That transitioned into working from home full time back in February.

I work from home as well. While it does have definite benefits, it's not all that culture makes it out to be, IMO. Go figure, when you're at your desk for 30 minutes with no calls nor emails, you decide to take a 2 minute break to make a sandwich or throw something in the wash and all hell breaks loose....phone calls...emails....pissed off customers. Lol. Never fails, every time. The other thing that's hard on me is that you are in the same exact environment, all day long. You wake up at work, you get off and are still at work. Pros are saving gas, don't need to dress up, see the family a little more. My job actually keeps me busy enough that I'm pretty much in front of the screen all day long, it is what it is. Busy enough that I have stuff I can do on my Jeep 20 feet away, but can't get to it during the day :grayno:

couldn't have said it better myself

Things I've discovered that greatly help.

1) a dedicated office with a door I can close
2) house rule that when the door is closed, I'm not to be disturbed, or at least knock
3) I use a 4 monitor system that I like
4) work in the office, not on the couch
5) a good set of headphones with a quality mic so others can hear me clearly
6) high speed Internet
7) don't wear sweatpants to work, even if no one will see me

4 monitors? Holy cow, I thought I was spoiled with 2 full sized! I start out in sweatpants or basketball shorts, but when I start feeling lazy I go put in my contacts and put on some real clothes

Haha. Granite, running the same set up at home. Things could be worse!

Clean up your desk Mike, that thing is a mess! :bleh:

Indeed it is. I have one group for my team at work (they're all in Dallas and I'm in Denver), one group for my community group from church, and one group for my buddies from back home. Keeps things pretty busy throughout the day.

That's awesone. The fire department I work for uses it as the official communication medium. I absolutely enjoy it. We get a lot of work done since we can communicate virtually anywhere at any time.

Well as an update. I was officially notified today that I wasn't selected for the position I applied for. It's OK though as the timing probably wasn't the best to be taking a new job. Also I doubt I'd have been able to work virtually. I'm not giving up though I have another suggestion to pass along to my supervisor in our state office..;).

Sorry to hear, but sounds like you've found the silver lining.
