As some of you may have already seen and know, last weekend was Cindy's birthday and of course, just 3 days before was Ripley's and as always, they wanted to celebrate their day, out in the desert. Here are a few pics from all the fun we had.

As luck would have it, the cloudy days we'd been having the better part of the week lifted and we were treated to some sunshine and beautiful clouds as we made our way out into the wilderness.

Our main plan for our first day out was to stop by a little known ravine, out in the Mojave and spend most of our day fossil hunting.

It takes a lot of work but it does pay off if you keep at it. Here you can see a rock that Cindy split open and the Trilobite that was inside of it.

Here are a few other samples that we found.

Working our way north, we made a stop along the Amargosa River and mainly because it was full of water and flowing. This is something you rarely see, especially this far south of the headwaters.

On the road again, we drove past a familiar spot and was about to pass it by but then we noticed something new there - a BIG PIG!
20260126095547-2b829d54.jpg

Mmmmm, bacon!!
20260126100328-31e2fd06.jpg

It was about this time that we found ourselves quite thirsty and so we decided to do something about it and at this fine establishment.
20260126100334-a3469ff4.jpg

With nightfall coming and the winds picking up, it was getting a bit too chilly to be outside for too much longer but decided to make this final stop to soak in the setting sun.
20260126100336-de7cacae.jpg

Of course, there was more thirst quenching to be done - CHEERS!

The following morning, Ripley was up bright and early and ready to get out to have more fun!
20260126100352-fb9db882.jpg

As we made our way out, we came across a frozen dry lake and just had to check it out.
20260126095621-37d6abe2.jpg

This stuff was slick and a ton of fun to slide on.

Our first stop of the day was to do some rockhounding and specifically, for Apache Tears and obsidian flakes.
20260126095639-cd80be09.jpg

20260126100400-69e8a3ff.jpg

Most of what we were looking for were smaller nuggets like these as they are great for tumbling.
20260126100355-be951392.jpg

But, every now and then, you can find flakes that had been napped from larger pieces and they're always pretty to look at.
20260126100430-05990b24.jpg

They're especially cool to look at with sun behind them.

Or, at least when Ripley would let me LOL.

Our next stop was to visit an area that has a series of springs and was once used a stage stop back in the day.

20260126100522-90bfd562.jpg

Surprisingly, there was quite a bit of water still flowing from the springs.
20260126095704-e4bc1f18.jpg

Or at least, in places it wasn't frozen over.

Here we are checking out the old corral.

Always love to do some dumpster diving in places like this and as luck would have it, there was a lot of historical trash to dig through.

Further along the dusty route, we pulled into the next springs and stage stop along the way.
20260126100601-c55f8201.jpg

As you can see here, the visitors that were here just before us weren't too happy about our arrival and decided to leave.
20260126100527-b3d2ade6.jpg

In spite of the sun being out, you can see that the water that normally flowed from this spring was still very much frozen.
20260126095821-e445a3eb.jpg

20260126095834-6bc461bb.jpg

In fact, the horses that were just here had to break the ice in order to get to drinkable water.

20260126100530-e4ed4507.jpg

An adjacent spring was just as frozen.
20260126095837-dea8c684.jpg

Our next stop was over at an old well and cabin that served a few diggings in the area.

On the move again, we drove past all kinds of beautiful sights and thoroughly enjoyed the vast remoteness in this part of Nevada.

Our final destination for the day was to visit an old silver-lead mine that operated from the late 1800s to the late 1930s.

Unfortunately, this once wonderful stamp mill was burned down by vandals back in the 1990s.

There's all kinds of cool stuff you can still find around here including this thing.

As you can see, it was made by the FARR Company out of Los Angeles.

Amazingly, this old hopper survived the fire.

Always love it when you can still find the shipping label on parts of old buildings.

Being almost at 7000 feet above sea level, there were still plenty of patches of snow and in spite of it not having snowed in quite some time. And, being that snow is the one thing that Ripley just goes nuts over, she had to remind me of the fact that it was here and that we had play in it.

After letting Ripley flip out in what little snow she could find, we made our way into town to check out whatever remained of it.
