What I loved most about films before the advent of CGI is that film makers had to work extra hard to create special effects that looked real. To me, the creativity, use of lighting and the employment of "smoke and mirrors" so to speak added a dimension of scale and realism that is often lost in today's ultra-crisp and clean digitally animated picture shows. Special effects used to be a true art form and back in 2011, back when a prequel was being made of the 1982 John Carpenter’s cult horror film "The Thing", Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. was hired to do their magic and create amazing animatronic creatures. Unfortunately, the producers ultimately decided to make a last minute change and replaced the real footage with CGI.

Fortunately for us, we have YouTube and I just found the following behind the scenes video of what ADI had made. And, if you're a fan of real special effects like me, I think you'll find what they did to be quite impressive. Check it out...

That was cool!! There is no way todays CGI can compete with this level of modeling, the texture, shadowing, movements are all better than CGI (at least to me). Thanks for showing this

That's badass Eddie. Thanks for sharing. I have a ton of respect for those artists who created the magic behind the movies by building models and sets. I love watching the making of the original Star Wars and those Death Star sets they built along with all the other spaceships.

That was an awesome video. I've been downloading a lot of classic movies lately and was just talking about the real sets versus all the new CGI ones...I have definitely preferred the classic real sets.

I'm not a film or photo buff at all but those were awesome. It was creepy and looked so real. I agree most new movies filled with CGI look like they are being filmed in a video game. Imagine how pissed the design studio had to be when they learned all their hard work wasn't going to be used.
