THE ALTER
Even before we bought this TJ, Cindy and I were always heading out to the Mojave Desert to explore all that we could and after we got it, we were out there even more. The following pics were from a trip we did where we came across a cool alter on a mountain side, with an awesome view and with a strange shrine inside of a nearby mine shaft.

Here's a pic of our very stock TJ soon after hitting dirt. Of course, Andrew was quick to get out and look for rocks.

Making our way out to a place we love.

Just like now, we were always a sucker for driving across a desert dry lake or what some people refer to as, a playa.

Across the valley and stopping at a mine that we'd been meaning to check out.

It was nice that Andrew always had a good time exploring with us and that this was all before cell phones, gameboys or the like.

This isn't exactly what we were expecting to find up here but it was very cool and interesting just the same.

Just like the alter, you can see that someone went through great lengths to improve the nearby exploratory shaft and make it into a shrine of sorts.

With the sun going down, it was time to make our way back to pavement.

Where are the pics of Eddie pre-ponytail?...haha. Very cool for sharing. Reminds me of when I was a kid we'd all jump in the bed of my neighbors Datsun pickup and go out to Stoddard Valley.
LOL - As mentioned, Cindy was still taking 35mm pic back then. I was the one using the fancy new digital camera. But, if I come across one, I'll be sure to scan it and post it up.

THE FREE RANGE
Not too many pics from this set that I found but there are a few of our TJ and it highlights how just 25 years ago, there were ranchers who were still free ranging their cattle out in this part of the Mojave Desert. Also, these were taken soon after we got our very first WAYOLIF license plate.

Back then, most of the trails were so seldom used, your tracks would be among the first in years if not decades.

Not sure if there was even any real grass to eat out here but here are the cows.

There was a fire out this way about a couple of years before we took this trip and you can see the dead Joshua Trees were still hanging onto their leaves.

I remember how everyone was all up in arms over the coil suspension "It's no longer a Jeep ! It's a station wagon now !". Goes to show you don't need $50k+ in mods to go out and have fun.
LOL - what's funny is hearing JK guys talk about the the shit they got for wheeling a 4-door. Like, the smack talk was something new. The coils were definitely the thing before that and the square headlights and plastic trim before that.

That said, you can still don't need $50k in mods to have fun :)
