PCV??

Caught the Bug
I have a 2013 that has started to smell like burning oil when parked after driving it a while. There is also an oil consumption issue, but no visible leaks. I’ve already replaced the rear main, valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket. No oil under the Jeep. The only thing I can think of is the PCV. Is there another indicator I can check to verify this? Or is it time to replace anyhow? I’ve got 167k miles.

Pcv is a one way check valve. You should be able to blow air thru it only one way.

have you checked the oil cooler valley?
flashlight will reflect the oil or as in this pic, I slide a long zip tie down along the fill neck

I second this. I already went through this. There was no visible leak until it finally gave way but the oil filter housing was leaking. I replaced it a year ago and no leaks since. Another thing to do is to looked near the PCV valve down to the side of the the 02 sensor(passenger side towards the tire) and look for burning oil. Maybe where oil spilled from changing the oil or something. My PCV valve was gone so I changed it also when I was chasing codes. The PCV was needing changing but my issue was a fuel injector which has been fixed. I had a burning smell and it went away when I carefully sprayed simple green and carefully pressued washed the area. I need to scrub that area with a scrubbing cloth as the oil burned on from when the oil filter housing leaked and although it was replaced, I didn't clean it well enough. Here is a pic of my culprit. When I remove the tire, I’ll get at it better and scrub the crap out of it with a degreaser.

oil cooler valley is clear. Had the oil cooler replaced at about 115k; had a severe leak leading up to it. Thanks for all the input here. Great forum with some great info. I'll crawl around a bit more. If anyone had a PCV go bad, how much oil would you consume? I have found that every 2 months or so I am about a half a quart down.

How many miles within that half a quart? Half a quart isn’t much and within a tolerable range if it’s anything over 1k miles

It's hit or miss. Sometimes I notice hardly any oil consumption, and other times it comes on within about 400-500 miles (half a quart or so). I notice it's mainly worse on longer trips vs short jaunts around town. It's definitely under 1000 miles to lose half a quart. For example, I went on a recent 300 mile trip. Checked the oil before I left, and it was fine. Got to my destination and rolled around town for about 15 miles or so, and found it 1/2 a quart low. Filled it up, drove 300 plus back home, and it's holding steady with no loss.

Have you opened your air filter lately? Curious if you have a bunch of blow by in there. I did and ended up replacing my motor. Although I was losing 3 quarts or so in 1000 miles.

I have a KandN in there that I oiled and cleaned about two months ago, and at the time it looked pretty good except some random leaves and stuff. Would there be oil and gas residue in there if the PCV is bad? Filter looked normal and not saturated that last time. I will have to pull it again this week and check it.

No not necessarily if the PCV is bad but if you had a bad motor.

If the PCV valve is bad (stuck open) then your engine will likely be burning a bit more oil. If it is stuck closed your engine may develop internal pressure and leak oil at any bad seal.

A little bit of dirty air leaks past the pistons and rods, and the PCV valve is supposed to recycle it into the engine to have another chance to get burned up.

Before engines had a PCV valve, there was a pipe running from the top of the block to under the car, and which chuffed some pollution.

Half a quart in 1000 miles is normal and well within acceptable range IMO.

In an example like overlanders, I would recommend doing a fresh oil change and then DONT ADD any oil. Drive it 1000 miles and check how low it is. If it’s less than 1qt you’re fine. If it’s over 1qt then you got bigger issues internal than a pcv valve

I’d probably just bring it to a reputable mechanic and have them check it out. This sounds like it could be nothing (older age/mileage), something small (like the PCV you mention) or something significant (worn rings, bad seals, etc requiring a major repair). Would probably be worth having an expert look it over.

That being said, I would probably start looking at the following:

Oil cooler housing: a fiberoptic camera is a good tool to look into the back of the valley to see if it’s leaking again. Mine was clear up front but full of oil outback. Mimicked a rear main seal and valve cover leak, with no oil on the ground. This is a known issue Jeep has been dealing with since the pentastar came out. When you mentioned you had the oil pan, rear main, and valve cover gasket replaced, my first thought went to the oil cooler housing.

PCV: would be worth looking at your oil filter to see if it’s having a bunch of oil dumping on it. From what I’ve read, oil on the air filter from the PCV valve can be considered normal or could mean a major engine issue. Could also be from overfilling your engine oil.

A compression and leak down test. Higher mileage with no external leaks with oil consumption. Should provide some insight or peace of mind if it checks out all good.

Do you have any oil in your radiator or overflow bottle? May be worth checking when it’s cold. Any overheating or jet engine sounding fan under normal driving conditions? Any exhaust color when starting up, idle when warm, when you floor it? The color and time of exhaust color may be helpful to know.

Again, a good mechanic could really help figure out exactly what is going on. Not just jumping to fixing one of the symptoms but figuring out what caused the symptom.
