high clearance exhaust options?

Dave, I am thinking of pulling the trigger on this setup, thanks guys! I will check a couple vendors tomorrow. I need to measure my setup, I think I can repurpose mine or at least the pipe to back. I have and had Jeeps with mid drop and fumes will come up if dropping under the rig. Remember guys carbon monoxide will not necessarily bring up exhaust smell and you do not want that stuff in the cab on the trail.

I would double check that it will pass smog. Quadratec says its for off-road only so I'm guessing you won't pass visual here in Cali.

I went with the flowmaster american thunder series kit. Its not too loud and sounds good on the 3.6. Clearance is perfect and the install was easy. So far, I like it. I was worried about the drone but it has none. One thing I will mention is I hate exhaust clamps so the one in the rear will get welded, it clears with no contact but I just dont like them.

So your saying nobody should buy this exhaust setup based on your current and past issues with carbon monoxide poisoning? I'm curious why there haven't been any claims against the manufacturer..

Last year I decided on a Magnaflow pro series off-road cat back system. It lets out before the rear axle. I put in a glasspack ($30) to reduce the decibel and drone at highway speeds. It sounds great and leaves me with no muffler or piping in the rear. Lots of clearance.

Dave I will give you a holler. Pretty sure it hsould not be an issue, I have pretty much teh same setup on the Tj. Smog wise for the exhaust all they care about is engine to manifold\header and that the cat must be in place . Beyond the cat you can run no muffler if you had too. My TJ dumps to a muffler right after the cat under the Jeep.

EDIT Found some info on CA specific stuff, long read, but pretty much CA is a pain in the button any vehicle modifications :)

I am not saying not to buy this setup. All I am saying is that any exhaust that dumps mid rig will have fumes and carbon monoxide rising to the cab and carbon monoxide is odorless, so even though we can not smell it it is there. Pretty sure anyone that has installed The Dyno or MBRP kits etc had no issues and attest they can not smell anything the cab, and I have no idea if these manufacturers did any tests (I may pose a question to the vendor as see what they say). Note some manufacturers indicate "offroad use only" on some exhaust systems (liability? DB noise? not sure).

Note that newer cars with CATS have a lot less CO output compared to older Jeeps, what is a good thing. The dump mid rig is not an issue while the Jeep is driving on the Freeway for example, but on a trail at very low crawling speed for hours you will obviously get more fumes in the cab (specially open top or doors off) with the exhaust closer to the rear passengers. I have little ones sitting in the back, so my preference is dump to the rear. Not to say that the exhaust at the end of the rig will not give any in cab fumes, but will be at a much lesser proportion compared to dumping before the axle.

Tenn very clean! Would you be able to check the exhaust part number (I believe it should be printed on the exhaust)? i.e. DYN17263?

What I am considering is adding the muffler in the location and keep the factory pipe and chop\reroute so it still dumps behind the Jeep on driver's side.

EDIT: Found some info from Dynamax online and they use the 17263 on their setup (rock crawler and evolution systems).

Actually found this pic on their facebook page:

Install instructions show 17263 as the muffler for the Dynomax 39522 system..

Offroad use only only means they haven't gone through CARB certification. Same thing where beadlock wheels aren't DOT approved. Doesn't mean you can't use them on the street or they're dangerous. That process is just too costly for some manufacturers to go through.

Dave,I hear ya but several products will not meet CARB cert and some will simply not pass the requirements for the certification. I.e. headers, carbs, injection, superchargers, exhausts and so on. We deal with the pain and the struggle is real in California, (sucks) hehe :)

Thanks for everyone on all the help, I am about to order the Dyno exhaust and will report back :)

I believe he did. Over here it is pretty nuts, but most smog places only care about intake and exhaust to cat. I have smogged a TJ before without a muffler without any issues.

Just ordered the dyno exhaust part so hoping to install soon and will report back :)
