Gear Ratio

Hey!

My vehicle: 2014 JK Wrangler Overland Unlimited (Australia’s version of the Sahara in a way).

So I have been reading through forums for days trying to figure out how to find my gear ratio. As I don’t have jack stand currently I couldn’t do the easy method but whatever. So I got my factory sheet and it says I have 3.73 ratio for the rear. Just wanting confirmation that this would also be the case for the front even though it is not stated.IMG_7126.png

Secondly I plan to run 35x12.5R17 tyres in a 2.5” game-changer lift and want to know what gear ratio yall would suggest. And with that should I go a 1310 or 1350 front driveshaft as I need a new one for the lift. As I hear that 1310 can be smart as you’d rather that fail then ruin your transfer case.

Thanks in advance!

Hopefully this works for you - you can get your window sticker details here

Yes I had a look at this last night hurt. Unfortunately it seems to provide no help. Like I believe I would have 3.73 at the front aswell as it’d be weird for a factory to release a mismatched ratio.

Gear ratio would be the same from the factory front and rear.

1310 shaft is weaker than stock which is 1330 so go 1350.

4.88’s with 35’s in my opinion. Manual transmission you could get away with 4.56 being it’s a six speed but 4.88 are better I think for performance.

Any brands yall would recommend for 1350 shafts. I hear Adam’s is good but afraid of the costs it would be to ship that.

Tom Woods seems to be very affordable in Australia coming at $1000 note that Teraflex one is $2000

In Australia many local shops are not keen on jeep related products haha they not loved here. But looking at some regardless. If I was to get one shipped over what brands would yall say are the best. Adams? JE Reel? Yukon?

I think Spicer makes 1350 shafts for the JK also... I have no vote on who's the best.

I'd gamble a gear and driveline service shop should be able to build a set for you even if they're not Jeep specialists. Driveshafts are driveshafts and not specific to Jeeps, they most likely just build the shafts from parts made by Yukon or Spicer. A bonus is if you have issues, you won't be mailing the shaft to the US for service or warranty.

Also... I cant remember where he's at in Australia but Josh Hill does a fair amount of imports from US and customization for off road stuff. I've camped with him at the King of the Hammers race in California a few times & he seems like a decent guy.

In the past, I've had good experiences with Tom Woods driveshafts. Based on that, I ordered one for the wife's Grand Cherokee. It wasn't long before it needed new u-joints. Took it to a local driveshaft shop that's known for quality work and it turned out that not only did the driveshaft need new u-joints, it was also a bit out of balance. Turns out Tom Woods has let its quality slip in the last few years, hiring inexperienced workers to meet increased demands.

I've been running Adams shafts in my JK for over three years without a problem. That said, I suggest talking to a reputable DS shop. It's easier to take your driveshaft to a local shop for warranty work than sending it back to an overseas mothership.

As far as gearing goes, I'd run 35s with your current 3.73s and see how you like it. You can always re-gear later.

Personally, I like 4.88s with 35s in my 2012 Rubicon with a manual transmission (I see you have the automatic). While the 4.10s were good on the trail, they'd run out of steam on uphill stretches of freeway here in Utah.

I wouldn't touch Tom Woods products. Dude's a loser.

Thanks man love the advice and think thats a awesome idea. Not rushing into anything anyway as here in Queensland 35" tyres are actually illegal on Wranglers haha. Just wanting to figure things out for my spreadsheet of the plans for the jeep haha.

And yes Im gathering alot of people don't like Tom Woods. Ill have to sus out a local shop and see how costly they are as Im aware some shops make them using Dana Spicer parts but they can cost ALOT. That being said I was talking to Metalcloak earlier and they said I should stick with a 1310 driveshaft if Im staying 35" or lower tyres and leaving it with a stock axle, reasoning being if something fails you want it to be the driveshaft.

That is terrible advice.
