Front U-joint broken, replacement suggestions.

I definitely understand that. After breaking a factory ford d60 shaft im trying to decide what I want to go to and RCV is my only chromo option other then a custom shaft and im not sure I want to take the chance yet. Everyone either loves them or has a horror story about them.
 
Dealership fixed under warranty

Dealer called to say that they replaced the entire front axle-assembly under warranty.
I can't get over there to pick it up for a few days, but I understand that to mean they installed an entire new d44?
Seems wasteful, but I guess I shouldn't complain.
Really liking the service department at this dealership!

Am I an asshole if I show up to pick up the jeep with a big box of the local fancy pants donuts for the service Dept?

Wow, that's great that your dealership cover the axle but to replace the entire front axle assembly?? That's just nuts.

Unless you grind out material in the u-joint axle yoke, a full circle clip won't fit in the stock axle. It is obvious that this failure (the OP's) was associated with losing a u-joint cap. This was likely because the c-clip came loose under load during a hard turn. If you stay with the stock axle (and c-clips), consider tack welding the u-joint caps to the axle yoke. There are a few posts on this forum regarding this procedure. The clips are dislodged when the cap turns in the yoke under load.
 
Pretty certain they were the ones that had a part in hand that we needed on JKX2011. We hit (if I recall) 5 Jeep dealerships along the Front Range and over to the Western Slope and the one we were staying at for the night had it the whole time. Pretty funny. :rock:

Service director there is a legit jeep guy that has a jku on 37"s and uses it for what it is.......
He just drove out (1000 miles plus) to run the rubicon with a local jeep club.
 
Im guessing they replaced the axle shaft assembly... not the whole housing guts and all. Paying a tech flat rate to remove a shaft and r&r a ujoint is probably less cost effective than replacing the whole assembly.

Would be really cool if they replaced the whole housing and you could keep the parts... sell the stock axle and buy rcv's or other shafts.

I am picking the jeep up tomorrow and I'll get the exact details.
I will post follow up as well.
Can't wait to get he jeep back, I want to run more trails before it snows and I'm 100% sick of driving my wife's car.

LOL ive been driving a fiat 500 for a week(the wifes)... i know EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN! gave my jeep a hug when i got her back monday :p
 
Wife is anal about her car....and I just gutted two bathrooms in our house and the entire car is covered inside with construction crap, drywall dust, dirt, etc......

Every vehicle I've owned becomes some sort of "work truck" no matter how nice.

I assume I'll give her car a nice inside and outside bath so she's happy....( happy enough to not give me shit about it)
