D30 abuse?

I always hear about the D30 not holding up. I know they are weaker but are they really that bad? What kind of abuse are we talking about for it to fail? Minor wheeling (over some rock beds) or major rock crawling?

What size tires? :D
It really depends on your wheeling style- the more aggressive you are- the quicker your chances of breaking something.
People have ran 31's to 40's on the Dana 30. Some say it's a ticking time bomb, but it will put up with a lot of abuse. It's up to you as to how much risk you want to take.

What I can tell you is that everyone has a different idea of what "wheeling hard" is. Also, bombing through the desert will kill any axle more than rock crawling ever will. In a nutshell, it really depends on where you live and the kind of wheeling you do but, time and use has a way of breaking things too.

I live in colorado. Baisicly what Im looking at is I do trails from a trails book. I stay away from the difficult trails due to the fact of having a D30 and it not being sleeved and gusset yet but there is a few trails that I have been looking at that are only difficult for about a 1/4 of the trail and don't want to risk a break.

Gusset your C's and maybe run some chromoly shafts, stick with 4.88 gears or lower and you'll be fine for a long time.

Its in the budget for the end of this year but with it stock for now im just wanting to know if I should do the trails or hold off till the work is done.

Running 35's, you can still bend your axle C's just driving around town. Gussets are cheap and I would just get them done now and call it a day. Sleeves are not needed and even if you were to bend your tubes, it won't stop you from driving your Jeep. If anything, I would make chromo shafts next on your list. With those two, you should be good to go.

I'm running 37's and heavy steel wheels no problem on a D30, right now it's just around town since it's my wife driving it while I'm deployed. No problems as of yet and it doesn't even have C gussets yet! I know I'm a rebel!! I have a spare set of axles waiting on me when i get home so i can see how much abuse a D30 can take lol. Prorocks are in the budget for summer of next year

This is my plan, especially since I don't wheel often and I'm definitely not aggressive on the trails.

Thanks for the great advice. Going to get the C's done now and then the shafts.

Honestly I wouldn't do anything to it besides c gussets. Get a spare set of stock shafts in case you have an issue and leave it alone until you can afford to upgrade to a better axle.

EXACTLY! Those that have been around for any period of time see this every day/week. Not to mention the unknown number of PMs he gets. I mean, it's not like I ever PM him with random questions, but I have a friend. ;):cheesy: Paying it forward and having his back against the trolls you mention is the least the rest of us can do. :thumb:

Great answers provided for the OP.

Is there a certain kit, or manf. of the "C" gussets that you recommend?

still have the dirty 30 in my jku it got artec truss and evo gussets from 1 months old, started on 35's then 37's now on 38's with 5.13s still factory shafts i have thrown 3 u joints but saved the shaft every time gone through 4 sets of lifetime moog balljoints and a set of synergy balljoints hahaha but the axle still has less then 0.5* of negative camber which is within spec and works perfect for me! has 95,000km on it now mind you I am not skinny pedal happy i prefer to choose my line and try it slow and steady if that doesnt work try another line we follow the tread lightly rule in ontario as well which is not spinning the tires like crazy to get over things if you can crawl up stuff in 3-5 attemps with minimal tire spinning then winch up so help preserve the trails for future use because once there at 40" deep ruts none of the smaller guys on 33-35 will be able to join us!
