D30 abuse?

Is there a certain kit, or manf. of the "C" gussets that you recommend?

As others have mentioned, I personally would recommend EVO c-gussets.

still have the dirty 30 in my jku it got artec truss and evo gussets from 1 months old, started on 35's then 37's now on 38's with 5.13s still factory shafts i have thrown 3 u joints but saved the shaft every time gone through 4 sets of lifetime moog balljoints and a set of synergy balljoints hahaha but the axle still has less then 0.5* of negative camber which is within spec and works perfect for me! has 95,000km on it now mind you I am not skinny pedal happy i prefer to choose my line and try it slow and steady if that doesnt work try another line we follow the tread lightly rule in ontario as well which is not spinning the tires like crazy to get over things if you can crawl up stuff in 3-5 attemps with minimal tire spinning then winch up so help preserve the trails for future use because once there at 40" deep ruts none of the smaller guys on 33-35 will be able to join us!

:cheesy: LOL at you "follow the tread lightly rule in Ontario"! As if everyone who's ever broken an axle must have been heavy on the skinny pedal, "crazy to get over things" and with no regard to the kind of trail damage tire spin can cause. I must say, that has to be one of the most snobby and obnoxious comments I've heard anyone say in a long time.

As I said before, everyone has their own idea of what "wheeling hard" really is.

uh ok? wasnt meant to be "snobby or rude" but sure its your forum so your right

:cheesy: Wasn't trying to be right, just calling it like I saw it. And to be clear, I never said you were being "rude", just "snobby and obnoxious".

Well if your every up north Edwin come say hi and we can wheel some trails if us boys up here arnt to "rude and obnoxious"

Well (I don't know what your name is), I would except, I've been known to break axles and so, I don't think I'd be very welcome up north. I mean, you "follow the tread lightly rule in Ontario" and the only way I could ever break something like a Dana 44 or even a 60 is by being "skinny pedal happy" and not choosing my line or trying it slow and steady. Clearly, I must be the kind of guy that spins his tires like crazy to get over things and have no regard for "preserving the trail for future use". And again, it's "SNOBBY" and obnoxious as in, you're full of yourself and like to look down on others. :naw:

I always hear about the D30 not holding up. I know they are weaker but are they really that bad? What kind of abuse are we talking about for it to fail? Minor wheeling (over some rock beds) or major rock crawling?

Why are you worried? Do you fear getting suck out on the trail, far away from home? Or do you not have the fund to replace it? Or are you worried about a break injuring someone/yourself?

I don't have the funds right now to replace it and there are a couple of trails I want to go on that are considered difficult for just a 1/4 mile of it and I don't want to get stuck out there. I'm calling today to get C's installed.

Glad to hear it. C's are going to be my first true upgrade to, long before I get a lift and tires.

I already did the lift and tires. So now that I'm wanting to hit some more aggressive trails I was wanting to know how much I should push it before problems arise.

In all fairness, bent C's or even a bent housing will not prevent you from driving your Jeep. Sure, it sucks to have camber on your wheels as that will cause poor tread wear but really, that's about all that will happen. If you bend your housing bad enough, that can cause a seal leak and that'll be your biggest problem but really, that's not something you'd see unless you did a lot of hard and fast driving in the desert. Point being, if you play hard enough, you're more likely to break an axle shaft than anything and at the u-joint as a c-clip can work itself off and let a cap fall out. Chromoly shafts typically come with full circle clips and that alone will prevent a break of this nature. Of course, you can tack weld your caps and that will help too. A broken shaft or ring and pinion is what will give you a bad day. IF you spend any money on your D30, that's where I'd put your money. But, like OverlanderJK said, I personally would just install the C's and call it a day. Running just 35's, you should be able to get a lot of life out of your D30 :yup:

That's the plan. I really appreciate everybody's input on this.
