About a week ago, I got a message from Brute here on the forum letting me know that he was up in South Lake Tahoe, all ready to run the Rubicon but was having problems with his JK. Of course, being that his JK is so highly modified, he was hoping I might know of a shop in the area that could help him out. And, as luck would have it for him, my local dealership, Carson City Jeep is a mod friendly dealership and after making a couple of calls, he was well on his way to getting his Jeep fixed. While this setback would prevent him from running the Rubicon with others here on WAYALIFE, he did have plans to run Fordyce later on in the week with Sierra Trek and so all was not lost... or, so he thought anyway.
As some of you may or may not know, there was a fatality on the first day of Sierra Trek and understandably, this forced the run to be cancelled. In addition to the tragic loss of life, people like Brute, someone who drove all the way down from Seattle and with the hopes of doing some wheeling, was now left with a long drive back home and without ever shifting into 4WD. Fortunately, Cindy and I were actually home, had some free time on our hands and we were happy to help a friend in need.
Although it's a far cry from Fordyce, Bronco Canyon is a trail close by and one we could do in a pinch. So, after wrapping up some work we needed to get done in the morning, we met up with Brute, Astroman, his nephew Ben and Buster3479 and his wife Kristy who came all the way out from Maryland. The following photos are highlights from our impromptu run and I hope you enjoy them.
Being that Cindy and I had some work done, we couldn't hit the trail until almost noon and that was a bummer being that it was smokey out and temps were supposed to hit 100°. Fortunately, everyone was okay with that and here are a few shots of us getting ready to roll at the trail head.
Here's Ed (Brute) and his awesome JK6.
This is Jim's (Astroman) very nice JK.
And finally, Phil (Buster3479) and Kristy unloading their JK from their trailer.
After we left the staging area, we made a long drive up into the Virginia Range and then dropped into a canyon to see one of the largest and nicest petroglyph displays in the State of Nevada.
There are literally thousands of petroglyph panels here and they extend all the way up to the ridge line.
Pressing ahead, we worked our way into the thick brush where we found that the last couple of winters have really wrecked on the trail. As in, made it a hell of a lot more fun!
Fortunately, everyone was more than capable for what the trail presented us.
In spite of it being August, much of the landscape was surprisingly still green.
For those who are familiar with this trail, there had been a Land Rover (probably stolen) buried up to the door handles in the mud bog to the right of Moby and for quite a long time. Nice to see that someone finally got it out.
Pushing our way through one of Nevada's finest pinstriping machines.
It's hard to imagine but the big rock that Moby is working his way around in this pic was once sitting at the level of the road.
Ed just squeaking by.
Phil almost clipped his rear fender.
Jim took a slightly higher line to help ensure he'd get by.
Oh joy, neon green muck that we get to wade into
