It's Time to SUPERSIZE Moby!

Congrats, I'm very jealous! Can't wait to see Moby in person some day

I turn my back for a few months and suddenly the only 3.8L older than mine (that I personally know of) is getting kicked to the curb!? Quitters!

(j/k... my trans has been making some pretty worrisome noises for a while now... I guess I can kind of understand...)

So does that mean a change in tires and wheels??

Unfortunately, yes, that's exactly what it means and I say unfortunately because ATX doesn't make a 20" Slab in an 8 lug bolt pattern. In other words, we'll have to settle with a 17" wheel and get new narrower 40" tires. Small trade off but, with any luck, the new K-spec Trail Grapplers will be available soon :yup:

Damn I'm way late to the game, but AWESOME! I can't wait to see it done. I do recall having a conversation not to long ago with Cindy about dropping a V8 in Moby. Hmmmmmm Eddie I'm no Detective ;) but you may want to take a good look at Moby's current setup. I'm thinking it was SABATOGE. Hahahaha. What a great way to force an engine upgrade. 

Wait a minute.... now that you mention it

What were some of the benefits of going with LS over HEMI?

First and foremost, no over heating issues, easier to program, lighter weight, smaller, fits better in a JK, lots of aftermarket support, better MPG and we've heard a lot of good things about the 6L80 tranny.

I hope you can give us details on the swap. What hick-ups you may run into, and hidden costs. A parts list would be awesome but very lengthy and time consuming I'm sure. Just interested in what all will be needed to make the motor swap happen. Cost not including labor. I'm very interested in taking my jeep this way when the 3.8 gives up on me

Well, that is the plan and we hope that this thread becomes a resource for anyone looking to do the same. :yup:

So does the fix it ticket say you have to get a GM body for the motor, or a Mopar motor for the body? :cheesy:

:cheesy: I only laugh because here in CA, a ticket for something like that probably isn't too far fetched

:cheesy: Actually, the 3.8L motor that we're pulling has only got about 14,000 miles on it so, yours is definitely older :D

Regarding your transmission, that's what got this whole thing going for us - a relatively new tranny that sounds like it's going to explode. :rolleyes2:

Congrats! So the question all are curious about, but have not asked. MPG?:)

Surprisingly, this new 6.2L motor should actually get measurably better MPG than our old 3.8L. For a V8, they are very fuel efficient and, being that it's a GM motor that is really common, there is a lot of support for it.

That's awesome! Glad to see you went with MoTech. I rode in one of their JKs in Vegas once when I was up there for a weekend. No lights on the dash whatsoever. Granted it was a stock height JK Rubi on stock tires, he said they were in the 22-23mpg range. It also had the 6L80E and shifted like a DREAM. best auto I've experienced from GM. Heck maybe even Ford and Chrysler for that matter. I'm looking at doing the same swap on my next JK build, with an LS3. I can't wait to see how the new setup performs in Moby!

Is this one of those tapuout or tacpen threads? :cheesy::cheesy:

A manual was an option but one we decided against - more because we would really start to break stuff than anything but, also because wheeling on really hard terrain in an auto is just so much easier.

Your getting old Eddie. I can read between the lines. ;)

This is awesome! Can't wait to see it in person and still not be able to keep up with you on the trail. :cheesy:

Does that 6.2 have Active Fuel Management (GM speak for cylinder de-activation). If yes, will it be fully functional with the Mo Tech kit?

oh yeah, congrats. consider me green with envy.:icon_crazy:

Congrats guys, that's awesome. Now we know Moby will be around longer. There was speculation that his time might be short:clap2:

RubiCAT has stock axles front and rear. :yup:

In the "Rubicat on the Rubicon" video there is a shot of a dynatrac axle.....or is that just a dynatrac diff cover?

Hey Doug, are you going to consider doing this?
