Been A Long Time: Update and a Question about Front Seat Removal

Hey Everyone!

Not sure when the last time I posted was... Anyway, I still love my JK and the Jeep community but I haven't had any time to get off road :(

I'll ask my question first: I'm getting a full detail done on Wednesday. A friend's doing it, he has the experience and all the equipment, and I'm going to help. I saw online that if the front seats are removed then you have to take it to a dealer to reset the airbags. Is this true? That seems crazy but this one guy online was calling another guy an idiot for removing the just the bolts...

Is it even worth the effort to remove the seats? I think I've got enough dirt and junk everywhere in my JK to warrant it but then I've never done it to know difficulty level versus benefits.

Last week I had new tires (Nitto Ridge Grappler), four new Fox shocks, and a Fox ATS stabilizer bar installed! My death wobble was out of control. I had someone trying to work on it but he didn't really know Jeeps. Then I found out a Jeep only custom shop moved near me. I'm really happy with their work so far!

After my detail I plan on putting on my front tube doors and taking the top off. It's been too long since I've done either.

Hope All are well,
fat

From my experience on multiple vehicles, the air bag light will only illuminate if the key is turned on while the seat connections are disconnected. I haven't done this on a jk though.

I don't have seat airbags but I think all you need to do is remove the negative from the battery then do what you need to do.

I've never heard from any of my friends who did front seat swaps say they had to take them to the dealer for a resest.

Thanks jeeeep and WJCO! I'll report back my experience, if I end up taking them out.

If you don't disconnect the battery I am pretty sure you will then be screwed and a trip to the dealer etc. will be in order. Happened on my 2007 JK when I changed front seats and didn't disconnect it. The computer is too smart for its own good.

Had mine out when I installed my compressor under the passenger seat. Had the driver seat out at the same time digging a pocket knife out from under the carpet. Just unhook the battery first and then reinstall the seat(s) and hook it back up before you reconnect the battery. You won't have any issues :thumb:

Sorry to hear that aermotor! Live and learn by other's mistakes :)

Sounds like a plan DDays! Probably a stupid question, but I'd rather do it correctly: Just unplug the negative side?

Ive had mine out with no issues. I pulled the negative cable. Took on water and a bunch of dusylt from the Rubicon so gutted the interior when I got home and detailed the hell out of it

It's half past f'it with the CAPS lock on!

Have had my seats out a few different times without disco battery, no problems at all. Just my experience, but would not think it is an issue. Mine is an '07. I would also suggest not cycling the ign switch when seat is unplugged though.

Like others have said if you don't cycle your ignition you'll be good, but its always good practice to disconnect the battery juuuuust in case.
You never know when you might get interrupted and forget.

Pulled mine out and didn't disconnect the battery. However it would be good practice to disconnect it. Didn't have to go to the dealer.

If you won't cycle the ignition while the harness is disconnected you are all good.

Sounds like I've got nothing to worry about... Which means I'll probably forget and start the ignition :) The guy who did the work for me last week said if I have issues after removing the seat he'd take care of it!

Thanks All!!!

I believe even if you turn the ignition on with any air bag plugs unplugged it will reset itself once everything is plugged back in. That's what it seems like I remember anyways. The airbag system checks itself immediately on the ignition being turned on. And so you can't reset the light at all until there is no longer a problem.

I removed the passenger seat in my 07. I drove around for a while without it. When I reinstalled it I disconnected the battery and put it back together. I didn't get any dash lights or any other problems at all.
