Rear axle leak

Hey guys, my rear axle is leaking something. Also this hose seems to be disconnected. I have no clue what this is and if I need to replace that fluid. Sorry for the noob question.

EDIT: I figured out it's the vent hose so I went ahead and just reconnected it. However I am worried about the amount of diff gear oil I lost. Should I just add some more?

That's the fill plug not the drain plug. And with the "oil" looking like that you should really be pulling the cover and cleaning everything out and inspecting it.

I know. I'm actually draining it now with the drain plug off.

I would do that but I don't have a replacement gasket.

EDIT: could I just use silicon?

You need to pull the cover and spray everthing clean with brake cleaner. Don't need a gasket, just RTV, black. Clean the surfaces and inside of the cover. You've had water in there for a while. You may have bearing damage, or not. Don't take short cuts.

The "Right Stuff Gasket maker" is what was recommended through this forum to me. I used in on my new front diff cover. As mentioned thoroughly clean everything with break cleaner and do a full inspection. Hopefully there are no surprises hiding behind the diff cover.

I'm on it. I don't have a torque wrench though. Is that going to be a problem when putting the diff cover back on?

Not necessarily but they do not take much. While installing my lift I pulled the diff bolts to install my CRC link and was torquing them to spec (30 ft. lbs.) and at about 25 I had one pull the thread from the housing. Start little by little and torque them evenly alternating sides until you gotten to them all.
 
do a cross pattern tighten sequence and don't tighten any one side down all the way - try to keep even number of turns on each bolt - just hand tight

you'll be able to feel when the rtv begins to squish if you go slow enough. make once around to get the RTV squished then let it sit as Overlander mentioned to let the RTV set.

After the RTV has set I think about 1 hour, go back around and snug them up. it's only 30 foot pounds so they don't need to be super tight
