How many miles is too many for a JK?

This might be a dumb question but would you need anything else besides a motor and tranny in order to swap from a 3.8 to a 3.6?

I'm no expert in this area, but I would assume you would need an updated ECU and all new wiring harnesses, etc since they are completely different engines. Correct me if this is inaccurate please

While it wasn't a Jeep, I had an S10 with a 4.3 V6 that went 296k before the timing slipped. I replaced the motor due to the mileage, but it didn't have any other issues. I did all the maintenance myself, in a timely fashion. I firmly believe that if you maintain them properly, they'll last a long time. If the 3.6 in my JK does crap out, I think I'll put a 5.7 hemi in it and keep driving it. 😁

Great question! So many variables though.

I would say if properly maintained, you can get well over 100,000 miles out of a JK. My 2009 JK has over 117,000 miles on the clock and still runs great. However, I tend to over maintain it by changing all fluids and filters more often than needed, keeping it clean top to bottom and correcting any issues that arise without delay.

Just my 2 cents! :yup:

A practice I picked up years ago was to change filters twice when I do an oil change. After I do the change I go for a short trip and change the filter again. IDK if this really works or not but
my reasoning is that this filters out any particles that were left over that didnt get flushed out when the oil was changed...:idontknow:

I just rolled over 100k myself on my '07 jku, got it at 80k and the only major issue I have had is oil leaking from the timing cover. Which is in the process of being fixed as I speak. Other than that its just been wheel speed sensors and a clockspring lol.

Rolled over 100k yesterday in my 07 JK. About 55k of those put on by me.
Take care of them and they run forever. Not a jeep, but I have an 07 Honda minivan that has over 200k on it and still runs well.

I've seen around 150k to 185k in my area still running like champs with little to no major issues. That being said used jeeps in my area are overpriced. If I was looking I would stay under 60k for a bit of piece of mind. Also prepare for the worst. I have a friend who finished paying on his wrangler and just kept the money every month in his account as of he was still paying. He's saving up for an eventual engine swap but not till his kicks the bucket.

230,000klm on my 08 3.8 and still going strong. I will just replace the motor and tranny when the time comes. It's taken too long to get it where I want it to start over again.

Man, I am jealous with mine being a 2011 with high miles, BUT it burns some oil. I do have that engine tick though. So question.. Any of your jeeps ever tick when first start up on a cold day and goes away in less than a second?

Like a "cold start until oil flow is restored"? thats normal with every vehicle :yup:

Or like a "BAD ticking sound"? some times lifters will tick, valve springs will creek, etc until they are properly lubricated with oil, once the oil pump start to circulate, this usually goes away/quiets down once the engine turns over and fires up... within a few seconds max anyway

Yup! I figured so.

We have been in the market for a "new to us JKU". A JKU up the street is an 07' 3.8, manual with 99,500 on the odometer and he's trying to get $16,900 for it (dealership). JKU Rubicons around here seem to average a minimum of $24K with around 100-125k miles and price jumps up like crazy as mileage drops. I'm trying to find one under 80k.

15,000 x age = don't go over that BRO!

It is crazy what they are worth in Florida. I bought my 2010 for $22,500 new and the dealership offered to give me $23,000 trade in and would swap the parts out. Normally, vehicles are a horrible investment but I literally could sell mine to a private party for what I paid.

Makes me think we dont drive ours enough...

Bought October 2010, 15 miles on it, here we are Feb 2016 and we are at 36,4xx. Granted my wife drives it to take kids to school and pick up then to work a couple days a week.

On the flip side I bought my 2015 GMC 3500 in May and I have almost 15000 miles on it already.
