I was looking foe some open trails in the San Diego mountain area. Just to go goof around on a Tuesday. I was trying to avoid just what happened, lots of locked gates. But I did know of a good one and took the drive to it and enjoyed the day in the back country.

The Black Mountain Truck Trail (near Ramona) is well known and leads to fantastic scenic views. You may see some locked gates but the route does not require them.

There are oodles of trails in the Anza Borrego area which appear on topo maps. There are many more established trails which are obvious when you see them.
