Unfortunately I think it has to be "vertical". My mom in FL was able to gift it to me. All on the up and up through an FFL and the DOJ. Grandparent to grandkid, parent to kid, etc. I'm pretty sure you can do private party transfer though, if you can find someone selling one, would just cost a lot more in CA.

Exactly. Intra-familial transfer is legal and only needs to go through an FFL if being done between states. Private party sale in easy to find in CA but you gotta be willing to spend $1500 on a $500 gun. The 43x is a great gun though!

will be interesting to see if a firearm not on the California approved list qualifies for this
