Went up Mauna Kea to check out some silverswords. Silverswords are a type of plant that is endemic to Hawaii. They only exist on Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Haleakala on Maui. They can live from 15-50 years or so, and bloom only once. Once they bloom, the plant dies. It was severely threatened, almost to the point of extinction due to sheep, goats, and pigs that used to run wild during the ranch days. Now they have fenced off certain areas in an attempt to regrow them, among other plants such as the mamane, which certain birds depend on for survival. While I’ve been up Mauna Kea many times, I’ve never gone up this way before but it has some epic views. I went up to about 11,700 feet or so elevation. It looks like another planet up here.

It's been a few years since I've been up there...Hawaiians named the silversword "ahinahina", meaning very grey...I had an grey Australian shepherd named Hina...

There were people everywhere. I probably won’t go back there on a holiday weekend again. We’ve never seen that many people there and been doing it at least five years now.

That's a bummer. I think a lot of what you're seeing is a result of the china virus. Everyone and their mother is getting out because it's the only thing they can do. Tahoe has been packed all summer and like I've never seen it before.

That’s what we thought too. Bader talked to some lady Friday night who said it was the busiest she has seen it in the 30 years she’s been going there.

Yep, I agree! Way more traffic then we’ve seen in past years.
