Lol. So many assumptions.

My dad put himself through Stanford. He had/has a great job and did pretty well. Nonetheless, he still works 5-6 days a week at 83 years old instead of wandering around society as a retiree who adds zero value to the world. I have two brothers, one is a doctor and the other is a teacher with a master's degree in biology; I'm an attorney. I got my first real job running a hot dog stand and bussing tables at 13. My next job (at 15) was working in the Circus Circus Midway which, if you have ever been there, you know is probably the worst place on earth (especially back when smoking was allowed.) I have had many jobs before becoming an attorney, including working as a laborer and ultimately a carpenter. Pretty sure there has been plenty of hard work, dedication and determination across the board in my family...luck had nothing to do with it.

The absence or presence of a work ethic, or of elitism, is not dictated by whether a kid works to buy a hooptie or gets a decent ride from their parents...it is dictated by the morals by which the parents live and by extension instill into the children.

Not taking anything away from your hard work, but just being born in America means you are luckier than most on the planet.

If only this were the mindset of the American majority.

I have a government job and while the pay is good the little amount of work I could do and still get paid is mind boggling. Don't even get me started on the office staff. It really tries my own values and work ethic. I constantly wrestle with my need to support my family and my need to be productive. If I can make it another 9 years (I've got close to 16 years in) I'll be eligible for retirement at 46 1/2. I don't care what is going on I'm getting the fuck out as I'll have plenty of life left to do something else.

Frankly, I do not lose sleep over these things either, in fact, I make sure to invest plenty in foreign and emerging markets. I just get a chuckle out of the hypocrisy of some/many.

The best ones are Labor Union members. Most don't realize they are biting the hand that feeds them.

I disagree. "Luck" presumes the presence of chance. It is not chance that I was born to my parents. There is no possible genetic way that I could have been born to anyone else since I am a combination of their genes. If I was born to someone else I would not be me. Does your mind hurt yet? :bleh:

Ladies and gentlemen of the Jury have you reached a verdict?

No your honor we are confused as fuck!

I'll play, What exactly are these "so many assumptions" you assume I assumed?

I don't recall ever saying anything about your father, Stanford... unless that was a generalized response not directed in response to me  not sure though. :idontknow:

All I said was, and I'll gladly say it again:
"I'ed rather help my child with higher education"
and
"if they want their own car, they can work hard for it"

plan ahead and mow lawns, wash cars, clear trees, clean neighbors garages, paint/wash exteriors, etc. just like I did. BEST case, I'll buy them a BASIC, reliable for a few grand depending on the situation when the time comes. But Priority number 1 is college, and I KNOW that shit ain't getting any cheaper...

Doing well in high school should be EXPECTED. not celebrated. No assumptions here. that is a fact. If they do well enough to earn themselves a free ride to college in doing so, THEN we will celebrate... just my opinion.

... I hope you&they are smart enough to realize that not everyone is so lucky and that alone doesn't make you/them any better than anyone else. Hard work, dedication and determination is what it takes.

You assumed that (1) my children are given everything; (2) that they (or I) are elitists. You also assume that getting a decent vehicle at 16 means you don't work for anything, or have no work ethic. At least that's how your comment read to me.

You also apparently assume that I made a choice to give my kid a Jeep rather than send him to college. I'm not sure where you came up with that, but it is absurd. It's not really an "either or" in my household, but that is because I work my ass off in the business that I own and started. I expect my staff to do well at their jobs, but I still celebrate them doing so by giving them good bonuses. Again, expectations and celebration aren't really "either or" propositions in my world, but to each their own.

Edit: my point in response to your previous post was simply that what someone has or does not have is hardly reflective of their work ethic or how they view other people. And lol, my dad's name is not Stanford.

(1) I didn't assume that. I assumed you were giving him a JK Rubicon... BUT only because you said you decided to give him said JK Rubicon...
(2) if you ARE giving your kid a $40k vehicle AND can afford to send him to college, news flash -> you ARE in the top % of US household income. :yup: congrats! no one every said it was an easy road. that THAT should be celebrated! :celebrate:

(3) awesome job on the business :thumb: I'm still struggling to get my own thing going. it's hard work for sure! not to mention turning your back on that sure fire bi-weekly paycheck... This is another thing worthy of celebration :celebrate:

(4) celebrations in "my world" are reserved for exceeding expectations.
Exhibit A:
If I have a goal of selling 1 product and that product sells. great! it's time to build another. :whew:
Exhibit B:
If i have a goal of selling 1 product and that product sells and another customer places an order for the same thing: YAHOO! Celebration time :celebrate:

But I wont ever celebrate mediocrity... Even with my employees... whats the point??
"oh I'm just barely scrapping by -> PARTY time!! ... thank god for credit cards!" = Current state of American Majority
"Yeah, you showed up every day like expected and we're not loosing money -> PARTY time!! ...thank god for credit cards!" = current state of American Majority Failing small business start-ups.

"Yeah, we've had the best month in company history! we wouldn't be here without you guys!" <- THIS make WAY MORE sense!!! :twocents: = current state of American MINORITY Successful small business start-ups
