Recovered the seats! Ordering red carpet next. Staying with all of the original colors.

A few 86 CJ questions...

The engine is a 4.2
Is the auto transmission most likely a TF999?
Dana 30 front?
AMC20 rear?
Transfer case?

Nice looking CJ7, what a great find! I have the Dana 44 in the rear in my 86 with the T5 transmission and Dana 300 transfer case. The 86 could have come with either the AMC 20 or the Dana 44 in the rear.

I have the AMC 20. The jeeps at my friends shop getting ball joints and new brakes out back. Ready to get it back home, finally got the wheels back from powder and I scored some newer 31” tires.

Took it out to my buddies land and shot my guns the other day. Pretty cool having a tailgate to set stuff on!

Thanks for the comments!

A pic with the powder coated wheels. Still need to mount the spare.
Debating on painting the Jeep, I enjoy the original paint but the hood needs some help. The rest of the body could use some buffing.

There’s an episode of Roadkill Garage where they restore the paint on an old car (roadrunner I think). You’d be surprised what some of those paint restoration kits with the right power buffing tools can do

I’ll check that episode out online. I thought about just clearing the hood, that usually looks decent and keeps some character.

Pulled the top and replaced the seal under the windshield frame. Did a little rust removal and treatment before I put the new seal on.

Bought my 86 CJ7 off of CL. Found it at 930pm and drive it home at midnight with old tags, a misfire and dog hair infested interior. Within one hour the guy had 30 text and calls wanting to see the jeep the next morning but, nobody was smart enough to say can I come by right now! The guy needed money, the price was well under market.

So far I have purchased an HEI and resealed the intake/exhaust manifold and valve cover. Changed the fluids and gave it a tune up. Added new full exhaust and had a shop make new seat covers after I repaired the broken seat frames.

I’m wanting to buy new carpet and restore the dash pad and console.

The only rust is on the rear lower rockers and the frame mounts in that area. The pan looks solid!

I’m thinking about repairing the rust, new paint and add new stripe package.

Should I leave it stock height and keep the stock tire size? What simple mods can I do that maintain original look but add esthetics and performance?

Man that’s a find! I’d throw just an inch or so larger tires on there. Just enough to give it a little girth without looking modified. Congrats
