Long Arm damage. How to prevent grease jerk damage?

Caught the Bug
Finished my first trail run with the long arm. I was worried before going that I would drag and the grease zerks would be damaged.

Here is a shot of the damaged, driver side that the grease jerk was damaged.

What do people do to prevent this? Do you pull the jerk off and plug the hole? I don't want to keep repairing it if someone has a good alternative.
 
I run my arms with the zerks pointing up. It does require me to remove the arm at the axle to grease it but I don't find it to be that big of a deal.
 
Got it. I guess I have some work to do

On Moby's PR60, there is a hole on top of the control arm mounts that pretty much line up with the zerks at ride height. I've been thinking about changing out the zerks to the flat kind that requires a needle fitting (NOT the kind that is used to poke into a rubber boot) so that I could just grease them through the hole. I'd be willing to bet you could drill out a hole to do the same on your axle.
 
I bought flush ones to swap out on the control arms. One normal one is broke and can’t get the broken one out. I’ve had a flush one break as well.
