JK 4.0 HO Swap for real.

Hey guys. I'm new here and this is my first post so please bare with me. I killed my 545rfe in a lake at my local quarry. Took on 3 litres of sandstone lake water through the stupid vented dipstick tube. Managed to drive 23 miles home and once I turned off the jeep and started it again it wouldn't move. Transmission destroyed. I hated the crd motor anyway so sold it in perfect working order. So now comes the good stuff. Im swapping in the legendary 4.0 fully rebuilt with an AW4/241 combo. Do I have your attention?

Regards
Ollie

Hello and welcome to the forum.

you're swapping out a CRD?? i'd love to have a CRD in my rig. I hear in 2016 (2015 model) they will finally offer one in the USA

But I guess your CRD is Mercedes? and that's as common over there as the 4.0 is here. Will be interesting to see how It works out.

CRD and transmission removed.

Well the CRD stinks. Only got 22 imperial mpg with 35's on 4.10 gears. My 91 2 door xj 4.0 HO/AW4 with 244,000 miles on it rollin on 33's with 3.55 gears gets 27 imperial mpg. Plus diesel is 10 pence (16 cents) per litre more in England.

Please excuse the scruffy PAS lines. They will be replaced and only on there to keep dirt out of the pump.

"Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez"!
"Let the good times roll baby", or something like that! Great project!:thumb::thumb:
I think the 4.0L HO may be the best engine Jeep has ever put in any of their products. Period!!My two Pence!

I had the 4.0 in two of my past Jeeps and I loved that motor. Hell, I still love to hear the sound of the 4.0 cranking before start-up! Personally if I were going to swap something into my JK, I would look forward and go with a modern HEMI or LS engine. However I applaud you, your creativity, and ingenuity; I am watching this build with bated breath.
:clap2:

Subscribed! Even if this is backwards to what I would like to do (put a diesel INTO a JK ) I'm looking forward to the 4.0 install. Looks good so far!

Well I have had a few common rail diesel engines and they do not come close the the 4.0 for reliability and durability. When you factor in the cost of parts for a modern diesel and the marginal fuel savings they really are not worth it. Now the cummins 5.9 or any other large capacity diesel is fine but the CRD/545rfe was a gutless combo. Wouldn't hold a gear and just felt mismatched. Anyway what kinda jeep has a weeny Italian diesel under the hood? Its American! It needs an american motor.
