Some of the trails are pretty tight and over grown with manzanita. Especially the trail to Smith Lake.

Thats a real bummer is there any good camping north of quincy

High Lakes area is gorgeous with lot's of great camping and the trail to Morris Lake is a bit of rock crawling but that's about as extreme as it gets out there. Lake Almanor is beautiful, not a lot of wheeling but plenty of dirt roads to keep you busy.

I was up there last weekend on the father in laws boat. I was considering a run up to volcano lake tomorrow with the family. Possibly Sierra buttes? My wife's family lives up in Graeagle so we constantly find new trails to wheel. Has anyone done the Poker flats run? I saw it on " trails.com". I read it started in Portola but I wasn't sure where? I grew up in Portola so I assume it is somewhere behind the high school or court house?

The road to poker flat is currently closed, I assume it got washed out from the heavy rain this winter. Coming in from Downieville is a ridiculously step loooooong down hil dirt road. Much of it is single lane and loose in spots. I wouldn't attempt it without really low gearing, otherwise you,lol be riding your brakes for miles.

Ummm... honestly it's hard to say. It really depends on your set up and experience. I err on the side of caution when I don't know your set up or ability. They are "difficult" for different reasons, I wouldn't say one is more difficult than the other, it really depends on you. Steep, loose rocky climbs/descents with a some rock crawling up a waterfall and V notch. Do cliffs bother you? I would recommend trying to find some you tube videos of these trails to see what you think. Sorry I can't be of more help, I've been wheeling for 35 years, what I think is easy others think are hard so I don't want to mislead you since I don't know your skill level or vehicle set up.

That's to bad to hear about the road being closed. I was considering the Downieville side. So I may check it out in a couple weeks thank you for the info.
