5.5 inch long arm vs bigger tires axle shaft upgrade

I currently run a 3.5 inch RK Xfactor with Nitto TGS 37 (35.5) @29 psi. I'm debating the above because I want more clearance but I like my handling too, the great dilemma. I figure it's either new axle shafts front and back with 40" Goodyear MTR which net about 2" overall lift or just go long arm with Goodyear MTRs. Or some other lift tire combo keeping in mind about a 2k budget without tires for now. Any idea would be appreciated! Gotta go order an evo evaporator skid plate. Oh and some of this is also my learning to wheel as well....

I hope you don't take this the wrong way but are you just wanting to have a Jeep that looks cool or are you actually planning on wheeling it? 5.5" of lift is A LOT of lift and with that much height, you'd really want long arms to give you a better ride on pavement. Regarding 40" tires, you won't need new shafts if you're Jeep is just a pavement princess but if you wheel your Jeep hard, they won't do a whole lot for you either. As far as MTR's go, not sure why you're wanting them but they are without question, the worst tire I have ever run and I wouldn't recommend them.

I agree with WAL. MTRs are terrible and if you are going to wheel keep it center of gravity low.

What is your goal? To look 'cool' or wheel good?

Be honest here and you will get an honest answer.

If you want to run 40's, you will need more than just new axle shafts. You will want bigger stronger fully built axles altogether. Unless your rig doesn't see any dirt or rocks, then I guess you'd be okay. All depends on what you personally do with your jeep. And 5.5 as everyone has said is a LOT of lift. You're not gonna find many people here that will agree with that idea lol

I appreciate the response.....my goal is both, it's a looker for sure and I've also got skid plate damage if you know what I mean! I like low center of gravity because from what I've read here that is better and that's why I haven't done it before. I've heard of the balancing issues of the MTRs but they are closer to size than my 37s. I want to wheel on the weekends and mall crawl too....I ask you guys because I know I will get some straight answers and every shop I talk to tells me to stay where I'm at and not go higher. I've been to slick rock 5 times, rubicon 7 times and Hellhole 8 times, every time I go I learn something new so my in experience might be part of it like I said....

You need to stop obsessing over "actual" tire size. When it comes to modifying Jeeps, the only thing every manufacturer is focused on is what's written on the sidewalls. You running a 40" tire that has an actual size of 37" does NOT mean you're running a 37" tire - it means you're running a 40" tire as ALL tires sold as 40" measures about 37".

If that's all you're running, you'd probably be okay for awhile running a tire that has 40" stated on the side wall (actual measurement of 37") on factory axles but if you start to take on harder lines, you're kidding yourself if you really think a chromoly shaft is gonna help you.

So 40s equal complete axles, got it. So what I'm running is probable good then? Because I like it I just wanted a little more clearance and was trying to see what my options were....

I run 40x13.50's that have an actual measurement of about 37". To run them, I have a ProRock 60 up front and a ProRock 80 in the rear. I would NOT recommend running tires of this size on factory axles if only because I have tried it way back in the day and found out the hard way just how weak they really are. Yeah, the 37's you're running now is about as big as I would go. But then, that's just me.

Ok so 37s on stock 44s okay, what about axle shafts overkill? Also, is there anyway to get any more lift clearance with my setup? Ty

More clearance where? On the belly? Sure you could lift it higher but that could lead to a host of other issues.

I wonder if what you want exists.
The trail shots don't show anything particularly difficult. I would keep the 37" Nitto TGs and forget about belly clearance. Stack some rocks and take a different line.

If 2k is your budget you can't afford more than new tires anyway.
I've gone over the same argument with my JKU. It is so long that a couple inches of lift probably aren't going to do what you want.

You already look good and can wheel good with your rig the way it is.
