15x7 wheel for 31x10.5 tire good or bad

I'm wanting to get a set of Indy mag slots/kidney bean wheels for my CJ5 and want to try to keep the factory offset.
Will a 31x10.5 be a good fit on a 15x7 wheel or should I go with a 15x8? The offset goes from 3.75 to 4" between a 7 and 8" wheel.
What was the offset on the original slots!?

i see no reason why you shouldn't run 31x10.5 tires on a 17 inch rim. The wife has 29 inch K02 tires on 17 inch rims on her Grand Cherokee and they work fine. No problem airing down for off-roading and ride fine on the pavement.

I don't have an answer to your question about offset.
