Which pickup should I buy?

Was hoping to get some input on this as I’m considering switching the Miata out for a used truck to daily - obviously in the interest of space, ability to haul dirt bikes and whatnot, non-wheeling road trips, and maybe even towing the Jeep or jet skis if need be.

Not too concerned on efficiency but as a commuter primarily it would help - so I’d like to hear your experiences with maybe Ecoboost/V8 Fords, Hemi/EcoDiesel Rams, or V8/Duramax GM products.

On top of efficiency and capability, your experience in your given truck’s reliability would be greatly appreciated as well - I’d plan to keep a truck for a while.

Any notable midsize trucks would be helpful as well, but I’d prefer a half ton for sure.
I know I'm a little late to this thread but I think HighwayTrout has some solid advice.

That said and I know there isn't a whole lot of love for GM here but when you can afford it, I really like their 1500 with a 5.3L. Relatively affordable for a half ton and I feel like they're real quick/fun to drive for what they are. Certainly, cheaper than a RAM 1500 with a 3.6L and perform better or a least, from what I have seen. I have no experience with F150s and so that we're all on the same page here, you were asking for half tons, right?

Do you plan to put a white camper shell with only a skylight to view the stars on it maybe a shag interior with an air mattress and a lava lamp and make trips to park down by the river?
I’m curious what exactly is wrong with this? The shag is green with orange accents woven in for reference. Because, you know, orange is the new offroading trim. Otherwise it would be purple.

Well good, I'd say Toyota.
The guys i know that have DEF diesel trucks seem to always have issues, of the 25 Ford trucks client uses in the oil field, the 10 DEF trucks seem to always be in for repair; granted they work them hard but the previous non DEF diesels ran strong.
Toyota would be solid but I have to say I’ve just never been a fan. Looks wise mainly. The 2UZ and 3UZ V8s were awesome though.

Unless you're already in this position, Trout is dead nuts on: Debt free all the way. Build up a nest egg & pay cash & get established in your new gig then look at something.
100%. I have a lot of cash put away and paid the Jeep off earlier this year. That’s the plan and I really just wanted to start a discussion given me buying a truck is inevitable anyway.

My family actually has mostly GM products other than Jeeps, so I’m pretty familiar with the 5.3 and 6.2 Silverados/Sierras. My dad is actually pretty close to biting the bullet on a Sierra Denali with the 5.3 or 6.2 really soon. Will hopefully get a greater insight there. (His primary vehicle has been a 2006 Hummer H2 with the 6.2 for the last 19 years haha)

And yes! Half tons. 👍

You can only get a Denali with the 6.2 or the 3.0 diesel. The hummer would have a 6.0 LQ9 iron block. A much better option than a 5.3 or 6.2 because it didn’t have the DOD/AFM in it

Devils advocate again: Do you truly need a full-size? You can tow a jet-ski with a Tacoma. Are you really likely to tow your Jeep?
If I was not towing or hauling something big I'd buy one of these. They last friggin forever so after you pay it off you'd still have a reliable vehicle for years and no car payment.

Have you listened to old fart advice when you were 22???

Got it, and I should have clarified he isn't set on a Denali but is leaning that way. He'd be good with any trim that'll get you leather. He called me last night to ask some questions about the new trucks and I had to break the bad news to him that they don't have CD players anymore haha.

And yeah you're right, the Vortec is what he has and it's gotten him 215k miles and counting.

Nope lol. Don't need a full size. Definitely more of a want and it's unlikely I'll actually tow the Jeep. I've got numerous friends with 2nd and 3rd gen Tacomas and they're great trucks, but I personally feel cramped inside (that's saying something being that I'm 5' 8") and don't like the driving position. Other Midsize truck ideas or insight would be appreciated though, open to them for sure.

For me to get a Tacoma, it's gonna have to be a first gen.
