WAYALIFE Rockin Rubicon Run 2014 : June 15th - 17th

Had an absolute blast! An epic trip for sure as Brian said. So many great things to try to sum up. Hanging with friends, catching up with others and making a lot of new friends.

The highlights of coarse was the amazing offroading of the legendary Rubicon. Just amazing wheeling I'll never forget. Shout out to Adam (Overlander) for some good spotting on little sluice. To Eddie for his awesome help and spotting on every obstacle and teaching me so much as a rookie wheeler.

A huge thank you to both Cindy and Eddie for putting this all together. You guys rock!!!

That was a long trip, but it sure was fun!! It was very nice to meet new friends, and hang our with old ones.


I was an idiot and decided to try 2nd gear with the skinny pedal on a double ledge- after launching the jeep completely airborne and coming down hard, I had completely destroyed my rear driveshaft (broke both u joints, the cv, and broke the ears off one end). Thank to Russ an Derrick for seeing me back to the trailhead in front wheel drive! View attachment 88052 View attachment 88053

I found some of the nicest jeepers who were actually willing to let me take parts off their working jeep to get me back on the trail (I had a spare cv joint and tons of spare u joints, so all I needed was the slip on piece with new ears) View attachment 88054

And returned the yoke to their jeep in Placerville after finishing the trail

We were 3-4 hours behind the group after repairing the driveshaft, and trying to catch them- so we weren't spotting anything, just having a good time and munching on some burritos when right after buck island lake, I didn't see a big rock that was hiding behind two others... It wasn't a problem, just backed off of it, but the new line really bound up the drivers side front tire, and when I let the clutch out, the 4:1 t case decided It was stronger than the d60 outer axle shaft. It split the shaft down the center, and in the process, pushed itself out the end of the hub, destroying the hub in the process.. I wasn't too worried because I had a spare hub and a spare d60 stub shaft, so I threw some duct tape over the end of the broken hub and continued chasing the group in 3 wheel drive. We caught up to the group just after ascending the big sluice and followed them in to rubicon springs for the night.

Monday morning I tackled the axle shaft/hub repair, and was thrilled to discover that my spare shaft was for a dodge d60 so the splines weren't long enough and the shaft was 1/2" too long. Refusing to take no of an answer, I cut the splines longer, and trimmed the shaft to the correct length.

It was a fun trip that I will remember for a long time!

All we can say is WOW!
Don summed it up before we took off Sunday morning as - relentless, constant crawling, full attention at all times for the entire day, but tons of fun.
I had all kinds of ideas about what the Rubicon looked like and what it was like to run but never thought it would be so epic.
We are both so surprised by what a Jeep can do with some proper (but never finished) modifications. We have a very capable machine!
The spotting we had for the tougher sections was perfect.
Little sluice - amazed we did it in one pass with great spotting by Overlander - thanks Adam.
Big Sluice - not so tough, but some "tough" Toyota terds at the bottom talking trash.

Big shout out to Kyle and Brent - I know I couldn't have done this without both of you guys!

The kind of trail I would only do once a year but definitely want to do every year.
Thanks Eddie and Cindy for your hospitality to Lucy and I at your home and on the trail.

Character - a quality few develop and few care about any longer - I'll say this about Eddie: When we finally reached the Observation point at the top of Cadillac Hill we were all told that Professionaldriver had broken a sector shaft in the middle of Cadillac Hill and a new steering box would have to be brought from Reno. I could tell Eddie was tired but, with a depth of character some had told me about, he demonstrated what it is to never leave someone behind. He went back down Cadillac Hill with Tony and Doug and replaced the steering box after hours waiting on the trail. That means more to me than anything else that happened on that tough trail. It's the grand assurance that you're not on your own when you're on his trail.

Easier? Ummmm. The rocks!

That thing came right up! Definitely more expensive to do it in the rocks though.

Yep^^^^ He is the "real deal". Those of us that have run with Eddie, Cindy, and the Wayalife group know that you can count on it. I have personally experienced breaking after a long day and his unwavering support to help. :rock:

As others have said, an epic trip to say the least. It was great to go with good friends and meet new ones and put some faces to some screen names.
