tire width vs wheel width?

How much wider can a tire be than a wheel? Would it hurt much to have a tire a half inch wider than the rim? an inch even?

The tire manufacture will give you specs on a approved range of wheel widths, for example a Falken WildPeak A/T size 37X12.5R17 has an approved rim width of 8.5-11in

It'll depend a bit on your sidewall too. If you're running some pimp 28" wheels and low profile 31" slicks then you don't want a tire with excess width. 35" tires wrapped around a 16" wheel can handle the narrow wheel.

Also consider airing down on the trail. Don't want to lose beads regularly just because you want to mount a 14.5" wide tire on your stock 7.5" wheel.

I agree, except the same can be said about too wide of a wheel on a tire like a 10" wide wheel and 12.50" wide tire will be more likely to loose a bead as well...Look at manufacuters recomendation and you have some wiggle room to go a little smaller. Just not too much if the mentioned tire to wheel height is close.
