The Rebuilding of Smokin's 2014 JKUR Build

Decided to upgrade the tire carrier pins today to some quick release pins. The ORE pins are 9/16". I had tried some 1/2" diameter QD pins to see if it would rattle but it didn't on the drive home from California. It's the binding/flexing of the Johnny joints that makes the tire carrier firm. The 1/2" pins were easier to find, had greater selection, and cost less. Ordered these pins from McMaster Carr in a shorter 3.5" length. Planning on getting some stainless lanyards so they can dangle.

Just looked at those pins on McMaster Carr. Am I reading this right, $67 per pin??????

I paid $58 on monday. WAY expensive and still over $100 for pin. I found the 9/16 pins somewhere online for $94/pin!!! The lanyards are cheap at $2.44 for an 8" coated stainless lanyard. You can find the 4.5" long ones on eBay for $30 for the set. I just didn't want to compromise and the longer length annoyed me (since the bottom pin would hit the bottom of the top pin if you remove that pin first).

Pretty bad ass, I saw a master lock type pin i'm debating. Would be good to have on trips, so nobody steals your spare out of a hotel parking lot

i just ordered one on amazon, but my hunch is that I'll never use it. A ~200lb spare isn't the easiest thing to walk off with....

Ha well I just cancelled my amazon order. Turns out that most of the pins that will span the 3.5" in length to bridge the EVO gussets have a 5/8" pin diameter. The maximum we can use is 9/16. If anyone finds a longer one, let me know.

That's pretty funny, I never saw that genright picture till now and I've been running that EXACT same lock on my tire carrier for months now lol.

It works!

Like I said before, the chances of someone walking off with your tire is slim... But I have seen some weird shit in my time!

This is what I'm doing. Just need to turn a bit off as it's a little short. <img src="http://wayalife.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=97814"/>
What I bought at autozone. Fits with no slack.
