what does the other half of the case look like? are you sure it's in the case or does the knocking happen when you engage the disconnect.
Mine will sometimes knock when engaged depending on weather I engage it on flat or uneven ground, also it knocked when the swaybar link bushings were worn out and bolts loose
The knock is definitely coming out of the case. Therefore, I would like to ask you to inquire at the manufacturer about the availability of repair kits.

They don't have repair kits, only sell the assembly.
The repair kit most common is something like this:
