RUBICON Father's Day Run 2025

Back in 1996, our good friend Mel from EVO started a tradition of running the Rubicon Trail with his family and friends on Father's Day weekend and it was one that lasted for about 10 years. Of course, like many things as time passes by and new business ventures take off, this tradition unfortunately fell by the way side or at least, until this past weekend. Fortunately, Cindy and I got the invite to join he, his wife Melissa, his daughter Harley and son, Melvin, to start this tradition once again and along with our friends Marshall, Harris, Jeremy from Disciple Off Road and his son Austin, Harley's boyfriend Antonio and his parents, Julio and Laura. Needless to say, the following few pics are of the fun that we had.

Honestly, is there any trip that Cindy and I are on that doesn't involve a pre-party with a few libations? 🤪

I did say "a few", right? CHEERS!!

Sign on the bathroom wall says it all.

Closing out an awesome evening with a beautiful sunset.

Bright and early the following morning, all packed up and ready to roll.

Topping off one last time and unfortunately, in California.
20250616150655-62246ae3.jpg

OUCH!!
20250616150656-598bc008.jpg

Meeting up with everyone and with skies that were definitely saying it was gonna be a great day!
20250616150657-ecdb8b85.jpg

Crossing over the Loon Lake Dam after a nice long drive through the tress is always a welcome sight.

20250616150659-dda1a33b.jpg

And here we are, the Rubicon Trail.
20250616150705-b1fd2151.jpg

Time to lock the hubs and air down.
20250616150706-95b43c7b.jpg

Unfortunately but not surprisingly, the start of the trail was PACKED with a TON of rigs and most to attend a bigass poker run. So, we just got in the line up and cruised with the traffic.

20250616150711-1a2f700f.jpg

For those of you who know the trail, you know that the fun starts off right away. Here's a shot of Mel in his very nice, 392.
20250616150714-336a8d64.jpg

Of course, this is us in our big Gladiator, JAWS.
20250616150719-887f1aa5.jpg

And, here's Marshall with BBG riding shotgun in his 392.
20250616150723-159cc329.jpg

This is Jeremy in his Ultra4 inspired JK.
20250616150726-f066e6c1.jpg

Being that we were in the flow of traffic, it was difficult to snap as many pics as we would have preferred so I'll show pics of Harley and Antonio as well as Julio and Laura later on. For now, it's time to run back to the Jeep and hitch a ride for a while.
20250616150728-cabf65fb.jpg

Time to cross the Granite Bowl.

20250616150747-5de39fa0.jpg

As we left the Granite Bowl, so did we leave a bulk of the traffic being that the poker run was headed out toward Ellis Creek.
20250616150748-8db9f00f.jpg

And just like that, we were back in the woods.. and mud... and mosquitos.
20250616150750-fe0d6b82.jpg

If you really need it, this is the one place you can reliably get cell service and recently, someone added the following sign to let newbies know.
20250616150754-ccab1301.jpg

Because of issues with her lockers, Mel decided to move Harley and Antonio to the front of the line up and just behind him, just in case they needed some help on the harder obstacles.
20250616150757-c4a8aff1.jpg
20250616150758-54230f4f.jpg

Antonio is a damn good driver and very little help was needed if at all.
20250616150803-da67fa80.jpg
20250616150806-8f1de29d.jpg

Being that this was more of just a camping trip than anything, we decided to pass on the Soup Bowl and press on to camp.
20250616150813-3d7b22c7.jpg

Obviously, that would also include the the hardest part of the Little Sluice as well.
20250616150817-ed97a475.jpg

20250616150819-017391a8.jpg

It didn't take much persuading for Mel to let me give it a go though.

Unfortunately, I had been having transmission problems and couldn't get 1st gear to work or at least, reliably and so I couldn't crawl slow enough to make things work. Really sucked. But, that gave more time for Jeremy to kill it with the help of Mel spotting him through.

With everyone out of the Sluice, we turned our attention to a more pressing issue - sidewall failure on Julio's LJ. And, to help fill you in on the details, Julio first noticed the damage soon after we started the trail but at the time, it was a slow leak and because we were stuck in traffic, he decided to just keep filling the tire with air when he could and as needed. Unfortunately, just before the Little Sluice, the small leak turned into a gaping hole.
20250616150835-6a929771.jpg

Now, what I failed to mention was the Julio came on the run without a spare! And yes, he knows what a mistake that was and vows to never do that shit again. Fortunately, Mel wasn't carrying a spare either but he did come prepared with a tire patch kit. Of course, that is something that needs to be applied on the inside and with beadlocks, that's something we could make happen or at least, with a bit of effort.
20250616150839-6b7182cd.jpg

After a bit of work with a super pricy ARB jack that blew a seal soon after we started using it and sprayed oil all over the place, we got the wheel off and Mel went to work patching up the sidewall tear.
20250616150842-a30d2a0e.jpg
20250616150849-1e237575.jpg

Time to get the tire back onto the wheel and test it out for any leaks.
20250616150850-592a8554.jpg

20250616150853-395d0b1c.jpg

And... the patch didn't hold or at least, the tear in the sidewall was still leaking quite a bit. But, as luck would have it, a Jeeper on the trail saw what was going on and offered up another solution he just happened to be carrying - GLUETREAD!
For those of you who've never heard of GLUETREAD, it's a patch kit specifically designed for sidewall tears. And I have to say, I've been sold on it enough that I even own a kit but forgot it in one of my other Jeeps. Anyway, we went to work on getting the tire ready for the patch and the grinder with flap disc that I did bring, really helped to make quick work out of it.

Glue applied to the tear.

Here's what the patch looks like after it was applied to the sidewall.
20250616150903-f7f11044.jpg

I should note that while the tire was being repaired, work was also being done on Harley's Jeep. As mentioned earlier, her locker wasn't working and wiring for it needed to be repaired. So nice that we could do all this in such an amazing location.
20250616150906-e99a9997.jpg

With repairs made, we got back on the trail and push our way down to Buck Island Lake.
20250616150910-8c64d33f.jpg

Just before the off camber slabs, we came across a group pulling an XJ with a broken front drive shaft. Here's a shot of Mel getting ready to help get it over a steep ledge and with his WARN winch.
20250616150924-855dd329.jpg

And yes, the XJ did have a winch but, for some reason, it wasn't working.
20250616150918-01f77e6d.jpg

And, we were on the move again.

Being that we were only camping for one night, Mel decided that we should set up camp along the shores of Buck Island Lake and so that we could enjoy the rest of the day by it.

Right out of camp was Bullshit Corner and just like always, it's still a challenge to get through.
20250616151434-1867e88f.jpg

And especially tough with a much longer Gladiator. But, I managed to get through it just the same.

Working our way down Big Sluice.
20250616151529-c738f137.jpg

Because we were always on the move, it was hard to get pics of everyone especially if they were further back in the pack but here's a shot of Julio's stretched and full hydro steer LJ running 42's. I should point out that at camp, a better repair of the tire was made using another GLUETREAD patch on the inside and it held up all the way to the end of the trail and back to South Lake Tahoe.

Awesome! Looks like a great time, thanks for sharing! I can’t believe how much water you had, must’ve been a ton of snow up there this winter. Glad you guys had a great time!

As for that gluetread, maybe I’ll go ahead and get the kit, been holding off because it just looked gimmicky. That, and I haven’t seen a Nitto sidewall ripped before. 🤷🏼‍♂️

great way to spend Father's Day!

I noticed the tire off the LJ at camp and was wondering if the patch failed, good patch kit to have on hand. (y)

Sucks the ARB jack failed, having used a jack and various other ratchity methods to unseat a bead lock (surprised how well the it sticks to the rim) I bought a BeadBuster, works pretty well (except it's double the price I paid)

Gluetread been in my Amazon Save for later list since 🤔🤔 lol

Great pics, and an awesome day on the trail! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks and glad you enjoyed the pics :)
Great pics. Surprised to see that Harbor Freight winch not working.
LOL - right!! :ROFLMAO:

For sure Nitto makes great tires but I'd be lying if I said that I haven't torn a few load range C Trail Grappler sidewalls over the years. Not any E's though but then, they ride like shit.

Yeah, the first time around, the LJ only put in 20 psi and the patch held for the most part but had a slow leak by the time we got to camp. With so much more wheeling ahead of us the next day and being that we had more patches, we decided to redo it and do it right - inside and out. When it got off the trail, it had the same 40 psi in it as it did after reinstalling it.

Great pictures. Looks like an amazing run. Glad you conquered your trail fixes. Hope your transmission issue is resolved soon.

lol, the ARB jack leaking! Don’t get me wrong, I love their compressors, but it’s kinda funny that the jack leaked. They are so proud of those things. And they are expensive!

Awesome pics! Was such a fun time and already miss being out there with everyone. Though it’s always a bummer to have a break, it definitely made for some fun laughs and a good time hanging out making the best of it. It’s all about perspective 🤙🏼 I’m definitely buying some of those tire patch kits though lol

At least the XJ saved a couple bucks when he bought that Badlands 🤪 but glad Mel was able to help him out.

Thanks again for all the pics, fun times and memories. Already looking forward to more.

What a great "Get-outa-da-house" that trip looked like. The conga line at the start would have me wondering what I got myself into. Glad it evened out in the long run. I know from earlier trips that a stock Jeep would have been in over its head. But what about a stock 392?
