Replacing inner axle seals, quick question...

Are the plastic axle shaft guides really necessary to reinstall? I damaged both of them removing the seals and I am wondering if I need to get new ones. My axle is sleeved so the smaller diameter tubing already kind of guides the shaft into the center section.

I never put mine back in. I put a little grease on the splines when I put the axle shafts back in carefully to not mess up the inner seals.
