When I was still a kid, I remember my dad turning on the heater while driving in the desert up long grades. It did seem to help, but it did not feel great as a passenger with the windows open (e.g already something like 116 degrees) and the heat on.As mentioned, your AC will make your engine work harder and on a long grade on a hot day, it WILL cause your temps to go up. Turning it off will help keep things cooler. Of course, if you're running something like a V8 on a Jeep that's made for a 3.6L, things will heat up even with the AC off and sometimes, turning your heater on is the only thing that will bring temps down.
