NOT so FreshPet Dog Food

While we would love to feed Ripley fresh food, we're on the road way too much and it's just way too hard to do and to transport, especially when we're out and about more that a day or two. Because of this, we've been feeding her FreshPet and for a while now and for the most part, it's been great. You can pretty much find it at any pet store, grocery store and even Walmart and that makes it super convenient and of course, she seems to love it.

That said and just recently, we've found that some of the bags we've been getting smelled a bit off. And by that, I mean, normally, you'd open a bag and it'd smell surprisingly good and enough that I could probably eat it. But on a few, they kind of had a sour smell to them and just yesterday, we opened up a brand new bag that had an expiration date of 05/08/2026 and there were clearly chunks in it that were moldy.

Cindy did a quick look online and found that other people have been seeing this as well and that really sucks.

Any of you use FreshPet and if so, have you been seeing this as well?

I wonder how long and where it was stored by the store before putting it on the shelf. That's nasty.

Wow, that sucks, esp for what you pay for it. I also used them for a short time years ago but also ran into quality issues & I wasn't happy with the product price point vs what I could make it for. I never found moldy shit in mine though, thats a major QC fail
Honestly, if we weren't on the road so much, making our own food would be what we'd do.

Sucks to hear you had bad experiences with FreshPet.

That sucks! We had a beagle that we ended up having to make fresh food for. I would get those rolls of ground turkey and mix it with veggies and a little oatmeal. More expensive than the “high end” kibble she was on but still probably less than the fresh food available nowadays.

We thought about those but shush make it ourselves. If you bring your arb with you, I think you could get away with making it yourself. We make it and freeze it in one cup dishes called super cubes. You can leave them in there to travel (currently doing that on this trip) or put the in ziplock bags (what we do at home) for easy use.

Oh man what a bummer, we have looked at this as an option and it wasn’t cheap, so decided to make out now but it’s very time consuming with everything else in life and have though about pulling the trigger. Idk now tho 😬.

Those super cubes are a great idea. Thanks for the link! Do you have a recipe for the food you make?

We made our own for a while and froze it like Ovie but got lazy and use Oma’s pride. Expensive but arrives still very frozen in five pound blocks which we spoon off what we need for meals after partial thawing still a little messy but human grade food that’s well balanced as far as nutrients. They also have frozen patties but those are even more expensive, so we stuck with the blocks.
