Hey all,

First off thanks for the add, ive recently
picked up this 2016 Rubicon and ive had it for 3 months now and really enjoy it. Its my first manual offroad vehicle (not new to manuals, but never offroaded in one) and so far its been really fun driving it.

My latest journey was to the rubicon trail this past weekend where i started experiencing some problems. On Ice House rd going to Loon Lake i was driving in 3rd gear with the engine RPMs around 3500-4000rpms so that i can have enough torque to pull up the inclines on the roads, and then the check engine light came on.

I didnt notice any issues with the drivability or the engine so i just contined on as the entrance to Rubicon was only like 4 miles away so i just continued. Once at Rubicon, i scanned for fault codes and found P0306 which is Cylinder 6 misfire. I thought it was strange because i didn’t feel any misfire so i thought maybe the motor didn’t like being revved up so i just cleared it and continued the trail.

I camp at Rubicon entrance because we arrived late and started the trail in the morning. We made it to the 1.5 mile marker and the first bridge, but too much slushy snow was in the way for us to continue so we turned around. After leaving Rubicon we drove another 3 hours to another camp spot to spend the night, no check engine light at this time.

The next day we leave and im going up some steep mountain roads so im in 2nd gear and around 3-4k rpm and sure enough the check engine light comes on again. Scan it right away and its the same P0306 misfire code. Again no symptoms what so ever and no misfire is felt. I once again cleared it and drove 160 miles home and it didn’t reappear nor did i feel any misfire or performance loss.

I’m really baffled on this matter and i hope i don’t have a bad engine because that would really suck as this is my first jeep and i really really like it so far.

My first step repair will be to replace all the spark plugs and swap #6 coil pack with #1 coil pack and see if the problem follows the coil packs. I will update as i find out more!

TLDR: Just got a jkur and i love it but this #6 misfire code is kinda psyching me out. Gonna replace plugs and coils and see if that helps, will report back, thanks for looking!

Welcome to wayalife. With a manual there is zero reason to be in second gear going up a grade. Those manuals are geared so much better than autos. Sounds like you are looking for trouble and just beating the shit out of that thing. Maybe slow a down a bit?

I wasnt going fast enough to hit 3rd gear and when i did upshift on that hill it felt bogged down a bit, so back down to 2nd nice and slow up the hill.

Welcome from Oregon!!!

I had an intermittent P0306 that would trigger when I went over the mountains to central Oregon.
I initially thought it was the spark plug wire that went to cylinder #6 because I bumped it when installing my ARB, and it felt like it snapped in place when I pushed down on the boot. But the problem kept reappearing; I bought new plugs and kept putting them off because the CEL would reset itself. When I finally got around to replacing the plugs last fall, it was clear they were overdue, and #6 was the worst. I have made several trips over the mountains, and no more misfires.
