Moving to Delhi, India - thoughts/experiences?

Caught the Bug
I'm in the running for a kick ass job working with the India Navy. It is a 3 year position and they will pay to relocate me and my family to southern Delhi. I will not have to worry about driving or traffic since a vehicle and driver will be provided for me. I am currently in Afghanistan and have been to Iraq multiple times, but India is a new venture for me, as this is a permanent position, not contractor work like I've done in the past. I get 4 weeks of paid vacation and the company pays for round trip airfare home to the States for me and my family twice per year.

My questions are what is it like living there as an American? If you have been there, did you have a hard time finding food you liked? Decent restaurants for westerners? How about entertainment? Are there movie theaters, bars etc? What is it like living amongst the local people? How is the housing? A 3 bed 2 bath house is provided by the company for me, but I'm mainly curious if the places are nice or more on the run down side. How about the quality of doctors and healthcare? I am doing my own research as well, but figured I'd check in here to see if anyone has experience there. Thanks. :beer:
 
But seriously, your moving to Southern Delhi, I have a metric ton of Indian co workers and can ask arround for what you need...
 
Wow, that's a hell of a move. Don't know if I'd be willing to do that but I wish you the best of luck if that's what you're wanting to do. :yup:
 
The language spoken by locals is English with a little accent. As for the rest I am not sure. I have been to Mumbi and Culcuta and really enjoyed both visits. Again they were just visits. When I lived in Japan it took me a couple of months to find places I likes to go and entertain my self. Movie theaters are pretty decent but all the movies have subtitles and most are not from the US. I would recommend taking in as much of the local culture as you can and enjoy the experience of just living abroad. Rupi is the currency and you will have a pocket full.

Geography isn't my strong suit but I would have expected a navy position to be by the ocean. :thinking:

Regardless, what a great opportunity and a chance to see part of the world you might not otherwise! Now, whether I would do it would depend on whether I had kids, how old they are and where they are in school. The other consideration is what is your wife going to do all day? I had a friend with a terrific job offer in China, but in the end he turned it down because his wife would not be able to work there, at least not in her chosen career and their kids wouldn't be able to see their grandparents very often. But everyone's situation is different.

I would guess there is a lot of information on various websites for westerners/expats living in India.

Been there many times, be careful because many people(Indians) know they can rip you off so they will charge you more on everything, you can always negotiate the price with them, and it is CHAOTIC over there, stay away from unfiltered water or anything that is not cooked to a proper temperature because you will be used to their bacteria and will get sick, do not have dairy for a month as well, tea is ok

Lol. It's a helicopter field support rep position on SH-3 Sea King anti submarine helicopters. U.S. Navy foreign military sales contract. Teaching the Indian Navy the basics of the helicopter, how to fix it, that sort of thing. My daughter is 6 months old, and my wife will not be working. Full time stay at home mom.

Just call the customer service of any big company and ask how they like living in India, you'll have direct info and toll free! :D

Would be a good idea to have a Jeep with ARMOR!!!!
 
I have not been there personally, and not sure where my cousin goes when he travels over there for work (penske trucks) but I know he hates it, packs all his own food and water for when he is there which is usually around 3 weeks at a time I think. I know its not much but thought id add my :twocents:
