First off, allow me to state for the record that I am not trying to make some kind of political statement by posting this up but rather, sharing it with you because I am in fact fascinated with science, technology and ingenuity. With the exception of a 1" roofing nail and the bullet itself, the Liberator is made entirely out of 3-D printed plastic. Check it out...

Here's a short video from their website: http://defdist.org/

As the creator of this weapon states, this is the "Dawn of the Wiki Weapons" and by virtue of it, a new source of passionate debate. If it is to occur here, I would be grateful if everyone could please keep the rhetoric civil. Again, my main purpose for posting this up is to simply share something that I am interested in and intrigued with.

i am unable to see the video cause i am at work but this is pretty cool. the only thing i dont like about it is it seems to make it easier to get thru airport security (minus the bullet) with something like this.

love it

I think the 3D printers are pretty cool. Sure, this guy made a working gun, but I don't think people are anymore at risk of having the flight they are on hijacked. If someone wants to cause harm at an airport or in the air, you don't need a 3D printed gun to do it. Technology advancement is a cool thing:thumb:

the tech. involved with this is very cool. it is impressive how far we have come since the walk-man and the commador64 !!!

Amazing that the only non plastic parts are the bullet itself and the small "nail" like fireing pin. Amazing tech advances...

Read this last week. Interesting stuff. Reminds me of the Replicator on Star Trek Next Generations. Oh yeah, I'm a geek. :)

I think I'll stick with a multi-round weapon for my 'defense'. Granted the tech behind this is cool, for any real feasibility they need to develop something more than a one and done weapon.

I have 2 of these machines. I've
been doing rapid prototyping for years.
There's been others out there doing this too.

It's a shame this video will most likely touch off a "Chicken Little" response, but it does get my attention and the potential for this technology is infinite. I'm looking around the room I'm in and thinking, "I could make that.":yup:

That's pretty sweet.

We do a lot of prototyping at my work and have quite a few pieces which were originally made with a 3d printer. Saves a lot of time especially compared to having everything made on a CNC.

Next time I am in the lab I will shoot some pics of the parts that we made with the same technology.

The technology is cool, the application not so much. He is lucky it didn't blow up in his hand.

Hey Eddie,

Right with you I love seeing new technology and ingenuity. This is way cool. I want to see what else they can print. Working in the engineering field, the last project I worked on was the toilet water to tap (drinking) water:thinking::puke:. But this 3D printing blows that out of the water!:yup:

That's really cool shit, I've had the pleasure of seeing a couple Offroad prototypes built this way.

That's cool I didn't even know you could do something like that! Very creative. :yup:

The round used was only a .22 and the barrel made for it is proportionally quite large. The creator also stipulates that untreated, the barrel should only be used once - treated, no more than 10 rounds should be fired through it. Instead, he recommends that you have multiple barrels made and change them out.

For those worried about sneeking through a airplane there was a bill passed to makw sure they have some type of metal device imbedded in them. How people or what will go in to make sure this happens I don't know.

I dont think its barrels he's talking about but the lower receiver that will fill like in the video. Since this video has been made he has also done further reinforcement so it doesn't happen quite often but still should have a back up lower receiver
