As each year passes, we all get another year older and last year, I was in total denial about just how old I really was. And with that, I figured, what better way to spend a birthday in denial than to do it in Denio... Nevada that is! Like so many of our adventures, we did not film this one but we did take a pic here and there and hope you can enjoy them now.

Bright and early in the morning and Ripley is all ready to go!

With the sun climbing higher in the sky, we made a stop over at a concrete monument that was dedicated to the intrepid pioneers that cross this infamous, 40 Mile Desert.

I apologize for this not being easier to read but you can kind of make it out if you try.

After reflecting on the hardships and difficult trip the emigrants face, we got back in our modern prairie schooner and continued our way to the north.

Along the way, we climbed our way to the base of a butte to get a better view of the valley ahead.

So many reasons to stop and enjoy the desert but our journey to the north must go on.

One of the things we love most about Nevada are all the ancient dry lakes that you can drive on and for what seems like forever.

As we got closer to the Oregon border, the landscape began to reflect as much.

With the sun dipping below the mountains, we decided to make one last stop to hike across a valley to explore something we were seeing from a distance.

It really is just so beautiful out here and every which way you look!

If you look carefully, you can just make out the steam rising from the water flowing out of a nearby hot spring.

With the sun down and outside temps dipping to unpleasant degrees, Cindy and I continued on our way to our home for the night.

It always cracks me up whenever I talk to people who aren't from Nevada, describe what it's like. And, even though most think of Las Vegas, the rest of us don't.

Good morning from Denio Junction! We would have taken this pic the night before but it literally was pitch black out and there would have been nothing to see. In any case, here's a shot of our lovely accommodations.

I should note that Cindy and I don't make it a habit to visiting or exploring National Parks, State Parks or any type of preserve, reserve or government operated area as typically, they tend to have limited access and worse, are teaming with people. That said, way up here in the northwest corner of Nevada, it's remote enough to keep most folks away and so we decided to spend some time seeing what we can see at the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge.
20220217132813-119e2c53-me.jpg

One of our first stops along the way was to check out what is known as, The Thousand Creek Gorge.

You'll have to make the trek on foot to get to Kinney Camp but it really is worth the hike.

Built more than a 100 years ago by a German immigrant named William K. Ebeling who ran horses, cattle and sheep between 1890 to 1917. The ranch includes a well preserved two-story house that's been somewhat restored, a combination meat storage/bunkhouse, root cellar, chicken house and a barn surrounded by corrals.

Here are a couple of shots of the chicken house.

This is the very nice and large barn that's made out of Dufurrena sandstone.

The corral is really unique in that it's made from juniper posts interlaced with willows.

What's really interesting about Kinney Camp is that it's actually named after a squatter named McKenney. Here are a few shots of the the main house which is made out of 2-foot thick walls and has 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, pantry, featured 3wood stoves and large upstairs room.

Back on the trail, we made our way up to the top of one of the many mesas in the area. According to our maps.
20220217133018-3e808a31-me.jpg

And, this is what really sucks about visiting non-BLM government run lands. In spite of our maps showing us that the road should continue and for quite some time, we were stopped by one of these.
20220217133029-2fd86767-me.jpg

Continuing our way to the west, we made a stop for some lunch at the old Catnip Reservoir.

On the far western edge of the refuge, there's a trail that'll take you up to a fire lookout tower on the top Yellow Peak. And from here, you really can see forever.

And this is a shot looking out toward the west and into California in the distance.
20220217133127-20127055-me.jpg

As we made our way down Bald Mountain and into Long Valley, we were treated to an awesome view of Calcutta Lake... dry lake that is.
20220217133147-a42d8a8c-me.jpg

About half way down and just past the refuge boundary, we came across a really nice old cabin that reminded us of the geologist cabin out by Stripped Butte. It was well kept and open to the public but signs on it stated no camping was allowed.

But, that doesn't mean people don't spend the night in it.

Down in the valley and working our way toward California.

Of course, when you're heading to California, what better way to do it than out on an emigrant trail. Specifically, the Applegate Trail.

20220217133241-b25ccae9-me.jpg

And here we are at state line. Farewell Nevada and hello California!

And last but not least, Cindy and I celebrating a great time that stared in Denio and where we could continued to be in denial out on the trail. From Bruno's, one of our favorite watering holes in Northern Nevada, CHEERS!! 🍻

Great trip…I’m definitely going to check out Thousand Creek Gorge…it looks like possible trout habitat…
Thanks! Real pretty area up there. It was pretty damn cold though. I hope to go back when it's a little warmer.
