How Do I know which Steering Box I Have

Hello all - How do I know if I have an aluminum or steel steering box. I assume a 22 JLUR would have a steel one, but how can I check?

The 21s and on have the cast housing which is black. I believe the aluminum one wasn’t painted.

Correct, I believe it was mid year 21 when they made the switch. If you wipe it off and see silver, you have aluminum.

Look at the 4 bolts in your wheel well that hold the box on. Black bolts = the good box. I got mine upgraded in my 18 JL by Jeep Wave. 22 should be all set though because the new box was production in '21.
