So I've had a dripping shower head in the master bath for a couple days, so tonight after work I decide to replace the cartridge. Dunno what exact part I need so I shut off the water main to the house and pull the cartridge so I have something to match up. The wife, kid and I go to Lowes, get the part then decide to run some errands and grab some Buffalo Wild Wings. When we get home, we open the door to find a sizable puddle of water in the living/dining room area and a nice big bubble in the ceiling dripping water. From what I can tell, the water main gate valve must have been leaking by slightly and water must have been slowly running down the shower valve body, leaking down the interior wall and coming out the ceiling on the lower floor. Not sure how because I even left a sink faucet open in the bathroom below the level of the shower valve in case of that exact event. Anyhow, my night was full of cutting out all the water damaged Sheetrock and getting a fan set up to dry everything out. What really sucks is about 5 months ago I just scraped all the popcorn acoustic off (house was built in '79), installed recessed lighting, textured and painted the whole first floor including that room. Such is life I guess. Gonna give things a few days to dry and and start patch work. Could be worse I guess but never fun to come home to a house that's turning into a swimming pool.

We've all had an oh shit moment nothing worse and also coming back with the wrong part everything is closed whether it's the car jeep or home Glad it's just water not sewage

That shit never leaks in a closet does it? Always in the middle of the room. Mine was pinhole leaks in the copper in the middle of the freakin kitchen. Twice.
Sorry to see you have to do all that extra work.
 
I've come home to water on the floor too. I originally thought it was a failed washer drain hose. Once I fixed that I ran it through the fill and drain cycle only to discover it was a clogged washer drain pipe. I borrowed a snake but couldn't get it through the trap. Had to resort to a liquid drain cleaner. So crazy hydro chloric acid stuff. It cleared it an all was well. I hate patching drywall. Fortunately it was much worse and if appears you have the skills to do the repair yourself.

Oh man that sucks. Let me know if you need a hand. I'm just a short drive away and funny thing is my second job is drywall.
 
Man that sucks!! I could tell right away by looking at your picture that you've patched drywall before. To me the hardest part of that fix would be the painting. I hate house paints. So messy...... [emoji20]

Water is funny like that. As a plumber ive seen it do funny things. If theres water anywhere above the shower cartidge.(ie in a water hammer arrestor or in the shower head pipe) Andit gets air locked it can end up stuck in one place for a while. Then all of a sudden, release and drain to an open point. Which would be my guess as to what happened there. But who knows shitty luck and sorry to hear about that happening

Sounds like you know your stuff so I'll take your word for it. Didn't know there was water hammer arrestors in residential plumbing.

I agree that painting sucks. I just did quite a bit and was over it. But now I have no choice. But I'd say the worst part is cutting out all the water logged sheetrock. Just plain messy.

Thanks Owen, I appreciate that. I've done quite a bit of rock hanging and have gotten pretty good at patches so I should be alright. Thanks again though.

Haha, exactly! The good news is that I caught it fast so don't have to deal with mold abatement or any of that crap.

That sucks dude!

I just bought my first house in January and the first good rain storm of the year I noticed my drywall was getting water stains at the top. Turns out, my house needed a new roof. Not something you want to hear three months into owning a home.. lol.

Thankfully I went into it knowing I would need to put some money into the house, so all is good now. Good luck on getting it all fixed up!
 
I feel for you. It's sucks when things come up and drive spending money and time on this stuff. I had a shower drain leak and had to cut a similar sized hole. Then on top of that my ceiling was wavy and the builder put 1/4" or greater of mud in sections. So I had to draw it out over about 10 feet to get it flat. I was heated for days on that. Then had to paint the whole ceiling again. Good luck with the repair.

Yea that's a bad one. Roof is a biggie especially when you don't expect it. We just did ours a couple years ago. Glad you got it squared away. :thumb:

I bought my house brand new 3 years ago and at my house warming party my buddy's daughter decided to put toilet paper in the sink to make a pool for her Barbies. I shit you not, with all the guest downstairs in the kitchen and living room water starts leaking thru the ceiling in both rooms. Luckily since it was brand new there was warranty.

First water leak is an OMG WHAT THE FUCK AM I GONNA DO moment! After that it's a shit happens moment. I have a warranty that expires in 2021. Dealing with a leak at the moment. I have a flat roof and they such, but we really loved the house. It is a true adobe. Roofing company sent over sub that did work and found out he did sub-par work. Talking to him on phone he freaked on me and never returned calls to company or me. Fortunately, they are honoring...so far. What I have learned from owning five properties is that most contractors suck as well as home inspectors. You need to be handy and my wife and I are that and are capable of doing most things. Good luck hate to see that happen.

Damn that sucks. At that point if it was stripped down it'd be easier to fir it all out than use that much mud.

I have a flat roof as well, or almost flat. It's like a 2/12 pitch or something. I hate it because it's so hard to find someone to replace it... or that feels comfortable working on it, at least in my area. I love the look of it though :)

I've had similar things happen in my home but the way I look at it as I've worked on houses over half my life I'm saving tons of money being able to fix it myself the cost of materials is nothing compared to having someone come in and do it for you

I had a big bucket and didn't feel like it but in hindsight there was better ways. Patch is holding up I did thin coats with days between to keep it all dry so no cracks. But they don't build houses like they used to. That's for sure.
