High Sierra Poker Run 2025

Photo Jul 18 2025, 1 02 50 PM.jpg

Wanted to share an event that we will be doing if anyone is interested. Saturday and Sunday have 4 different trails to pick from with varying difficulties. Chad and I will be leading the Mirror Lake run on Saturday if anyone was interested in doing that trail. We also plan on running Swamp Lake on Sunday as participants. It's been a fun event that we usually do every year and will be staying up in Shaver Friday night through Monday. So let me know and maybe we can do a BBQ and beverages.

Where:
Bald Mountain / Base Camp
Near Shaver Lake, CA (Travel up highway 168 past Shaver Lake, turn right into the Tamarack Ridge Snow Park and follow in dirt road to Base Camp)

When:
August 29 - September 1 , 2025 (Labor Day Weekend)

Camping:
The area around base camp and the road leading in has a ton of open dispersed camping areas and is easily accessible for small to large campers. Base camp will be hosting the raffles and dinner. There are no additional fees for camping.

You can see all of the official information at Cal4Wheel.com for trail/event information and registration.

Registration Cutoff Dates:

  • The last day to pre-order clothing is August 16th, 2025
  • The last day of registration is August 20th, 2025

Included:

Vehicle registration includes one poker hand and one dinner. This years dinner is a Tri-Tip Sandwich & Chicken w/3 Sides.

Saturday Runs

  • SXS Bald Mountain (side-by-side/UTV)
  • Mirror Lake Run
  • Bald Mountain "Extreme" Run
  • Brewer Lake Run
The SXS run will have participants leave Base Camp via the creek trail to the Bald Mountain tower. From there they will take Bow Tie OHV to 9S09 and travel to 26E360 (Tri Tip) up to the top. From the top they will travel 9S10 around and down to cow creek bridge and around to 9S491. This will take them back to 9S09 and then to Base camp. The SXS runs must be separated from the trail rigs. To meet this insurance requirement, the SXS run will leave first in order to clear the way for the rigs coming up behind them. The SXS trail boss will need to clear the start for the trail rigs to proceed with Saturday's Bald Mountain run.

Saturday’s trail rig lineup consists of semi-easygoing Brewer Lake trail or the more intense Bald Extreme run and introduced in 2020 a run up to Mirror Lake.

Brewer offers an easier environment that gets challenging right at the lake. At least one locker and 35 inch tires are required to go all the way into the lake on this run.

Mirror Lake with its steep, rocky, and off-camber trail offers a short but difficult hardcore rock crawling experience. There are two locations where winch posts have been drilled and set in rocks. Mirror Lake offers swimming, fishing, camping and lake side relaxation. Run requires locking differentials in the front and the rear of your vehicle!

Our Bald extreme run mirrors the Moonlight Madness run but is held during the day. With the Bald Extreme run there is plenty of opportunity to test your rig out, but with options to go around the hard spots if you choose to do so, making it enjoyable for everyone. Please note that the Bald Extreme run requires at least one locking differential in the vehicle.

Sunday Runs

  • SXS Bald Mountain Run - TBD based on interest (side-by-side/UTV)
  • Swamp Lake Run
  • Bald Mountain Run
  • Coyote Lake Run
Sunday's SXS run will commence if there is interest from the participants. The SXS runs must be separated from the trail rigs. To meet this insurance requirement, the SXS run will leave first in order to clear the way for the rigs coming up behind them. The SXS trail boss will need to clear the start for the trail rigs to proceed with Sunday's Bald Mountain run.

Sunday’s lineup consists of the Swamp Lake Trail, Bald Mountain Trail and introduced in 2019 the Coyote Lake Trail.

Swamp Lake: The High Sierra Committee has been taking people across the Swamp Lake trail for over 30 years now. It is the heart of the High Sierra event and is one of the most scenic trails in the state. This trail will take most of the day and then some, but it is well worth the time. Please note that the Swamp Lake run now requires locking differentials in the front and the rear of your vehicle!

The Sunday Bald Mountain run is like Saturday’s run, but with less (hard) extreme spots. It is still a challenging run and one of the crowd favorites, but like the Saturday run there are a lot of bypasses that let you go around some of the tighter spots if you choose to.

The Coyote Lake trail is a high mountain lake hidden at the end of the Red Lake 4x4 Trail. Coyote Lake Trail is a challenging, rock crawling 4x4 trail that runs from Red Lake to Coyote Lake. Rock crawling, swimming, fishing, camping and lake side relaxation in the high mountains of the Sierra National Forest make for one of the most rewarding trails you can run. Rock obstacles, dense forest, and two lakes make Coyote Lake Trail a prime destination for the seasoned wheeler looking to get off the grid. Please note that the Coyote Lake Run requires at least one locking differential in the vehicle.

Are you getting out of free Texas and becoming a Mormon cult leader?
Free Texas is ok, flat, all private, shitty place to own a Jeep if you want to use it. Yes, there are off-road parks around but, no mud/clay shit for me, no paying stupid ass fees to drive around a few acres, and no camping in this swamp ass hot humid weather, and I'm not into driving hours to get to most of these places.

Grew up in Utah, cult leader is too much work and responsibility, not my thing to deal with that many needy sheeple; and, if they're the weird fucks that believe in child marriages, fuck that shit.

Maybe collect a few wives, get a Reality TV show.
🤔 🤔 collect several white wives and call the show Brown in the Middle...
I think we have a hit!

I'm very grateful what I do allows me the freedom to do this, still a few years before I decide if I want to retire.
Maybe semi-retire mode

Barring something unforeseen ( been trying to do this event for over a decade now and something always pops up ), I plan on going and running Mirror & Swamp lake. Have run Dusy dozens of times, never made it over to these trails.

Sounds like a lot of fun and we are planning to be on that side of the country anyway to attend Jeep Bash. @Traciehue and I are in.

Thanks for posting this up Jeremy. Are you a member of Cal4wheel? Do you think it’s worth getting a membership?

Oh awesome!! Now it’s a party 🤪 I am just because they host a lot of events around here and are the ones who do all of our trail maintenance to open them every year. But certainly not a must to join in on this.
