Get your new JKs now, seems like it's all over - No more Soild Axle in 2016

I've been hearing this and the diesel rumor for so long I am not holding my breath! Maybe they'll make a production wrangler pickup too

The diesel WILL happen. It will be a new 4 banger according to the head of VM, and not the V6. Couple that with IFS and essentially jeep will build an FJ cruiser, and if it looks anything like the new cherokee, then, well...

I'm sure if they go to an independent suspension setup, it'd be days after the release and someone will design a straight axle conversion.

It's gonna take me 20 years to get my JK how I want it to be anyway. So I'm not worried about buying a new one any time soon.

Design a straight axle conversion? People have been doing SAS's on every vehicle out there for decades. It's already been designed.

I've never done it, and Im not sure what's involved, but converting a modern (in this case a 2016 vehicle) from IFS to a solid axle can't be a cheap undertaking.

I'd run a Jeep with a Dana 60 IFS. I'm sure I could run any trail I would run with a solid axle, and it would be even more fun in the open desert.

I'm more worried about what they do to the body and removable top/doors.

We were talking at a SnG several months back when this news first came out. Not only did dynatrac have an IFS axle on display at SEMA, they also mentioned getting extreme travel with an IFS. So while different, may not be the end of the world.

As Eddie stated, the increased selling capability only means additional support for the wrangler as there will be more of them for the aftermarket upgrade developers.

Well, the CEO said that the two things he is definitely not getting rid of are the doors and the windshield so at least there is that. Who knows, maybe they will make some IFS system that will be as capable as a current stock JK. I guess its the modifying crowd that will find the changes more challenging to deal with, but I think the enthusiast (modifying) crowd is a single digit percent of the overall wrangler buyers.

I’ve had heated debates, by the way, inside the house about whether we should have a removable door or not have a removable door on the Wrangler; whether we should be able to knock down the windshield in the Wrangler or not knock it down. I don’t know how many people who own Wranglers have ever done that. I know I’ve never done it on mine, but I’ve been told there are a number of people that actually do that to the vehicle so we can’t remove any of those attributes on the Wrangler, and yet we’ve got to be able to do two things.

One, bring about a substantial light weighting of the vehicle because we’ve got to take some weight out. And secondly, we’ve got to improve its powertrain capabilities so it can do a variety of things with the rest of the powertrain story that we have within the Fiat/Chrysler world. And in the process, I think we’ll update design and style, but without touching the fundamental elements of the Wrangler. You’ve got to be very, very careful. You can update it, but you can’t change it. If you take the nature of the Wrangler out, you’ll kill it.

So that work is well under way. We’re going to make probably the final decision on this within the first quarter of this year and implementation is less than 24 months away. So I feel relatively comfortable that we’ve found sort of the solution to the puzzle.

The biggest issue that we have with the Wrangler, as you well know, is capacity limitations. We can’t make enough. I’ve also made it clear that I think the response that we’ve had from the workforce of the Wrangler plant has been nothing less than phenomenal. These people have worked around the clock. They’ve done incredible things to try to get us all the Wranglers we need.

We’re still looking for ways to increase the output of that plant because one of the commitments we’ve made is never to produce a Wrangler outside of Toledo. So whatever Wranglers are going to be made are going to be made there as long as I’m the CEO. They’ll not be built anywhere else. So I don’t know whether it gives you all the comfort you need on the Wrangler.

Hopefully, you are all right. One major question needs to be answered...as a car company ($$$) is it worth it to dump the enthusiasts (like all of us) and gain new buyers that DO NOT consider a wrangler because of it's ON road shortfalls (handling, dynamics, fuel economy, comfort, etc.)

I really hope they don't change the look too much, but if they can improve on one thing, they could give a windshield a slightly better angle so it can deflect rocks, and not take them head on.

I heard of them ditching the "foldable" windshield, but I don't think it's a feature used very often.

Don't follow me, I'm lost too! O|||||||O

It became too complicated on the JK. Members of various forums report that after dropping it for the first time, they have had leaks that have never been fixed. I personally don't care if they ditch it....its a feature that is too cumbersome (and ugly) to use but the doors need to stay. I know Im going to get flamed for this, but I'd love to see a hardtop wrangler (solid metal roof) with 1/2 doors and pillarless glass. That would give me all the fresh air I need.

Like this (I realize that this isn't a metal roof).

It was more or less a joke, meaning it doesn't matter what the auto manufacturers release, people will mod them as soon as they leave the showroom. It would have made more sense if I would have used the word 'perform' instead of 'design'. I know there's a shitload of Chevy and Ford trucks out there running SAS.

Well, there is always a chance another manufacturer might try and poach the jeep loyalists (like ford with their new bronco.)

I only dropped mine once (to install the ORFab cage), but mine never leaked a drop. That said, putting in a cage is the only reason in my book to drop the windshield these days.

Gotta have a full removable top. That, the doors, and the 7 slot grill are part of what makes a Jeep a Jeep.

I don't want to see them get rid of the removable top, I'd just like to see an option of a solid metal roof.

Forces not to be reckoned with! Lol, I agree.

The current hardtop is enough of a pain to take off alone, I'll skip in the metal roof lol.

You misunderstood...I want a solid NON removable roof (non convertible.) No taking off. :D
