Genright tire carrier

I know I’m resurrecting an old thread but I am considering this tire carrier and just have one main question to ask all those who have run or installed this carrier. I am weary of drilling all the holes needed for the install, my main concern is rust. The instructional videos and installs I have read on this and other forums do not discuss the issue of rust prevention on the sheet metal that is drilled.

Have any of you guys after drilling the holes for the mounting plate paint or prime in order to stop any rust issues behind the plate on the metal?

Thanks in advance.

Yea I painted the holes after I drilled them with paint, let it dry and installed everything. Haven't had any issues.

Yes, definately paint the holes as mentioned. I keep and use hobby paint pens like the one shown to below. It was worked well for me :yup: I have also used fingernail polish in a pinch.

One thing to consider is the clearance of your rear window. I have a 40 in mine and my friggin window wont open all the way.

guess that's a hard top problem?

I would love to see the new style carrier mounted up, thinking about making the switch possibly but then there goes getting into the back easily lol.

Yeah, it sucks. I haven't really looked for a solution but I'm sure it can be modified somehow to allow entry.

only real time I need to get into the back is when wheeling and that's usually not much. I just like the looks of it, not the swing down part. Just seems like a royal pita to lift the thing back up into place, but much easier to change your spare out.

Yeah screw the swing down ones!
