Gears & Lockers

I've gotta say, I'm loving my new 5.13s off-road. With the 4:1 ratio I can just point it at an obstacle and go. I'm on 35s now and plan for 37s... The highway RPMs are a shit ton better than they were with the 4.10s.

All that being said, since you've got the D30, I wouldn't recommend anything lower than 4.88 because of the size of the pinion. 🍻

Gears & Lockers

Guy on a run with us a couple of months ago blew up his 5:13 in a D30. The pinion is tiny. I would recommend against that, and against 37s on a D30 for that matter.

Thanks for this. Have been teetering on the thought. This really solidifies what is realistic and most functional.

Revolution gear actually makes a gear set for the Dana 30 they're 5.13 pinion is the same size as the 4.88

Brook’s a cool dude, I met him a few times at UOR Expo in Louisville. They’re doing some cool stuff with trying to eliminate gearset weak points.

Their customer service was amazing. I really didn't have a big issue or problem they was just on backorder for a while considering they're the only company that makes a 5.13 gear set for a high pinion 30

The general consensus, here, seems to be to not spend a lot of money, on a Dana 30. On a JK, anyway. Don’t lock a d30 front on something you may break anyway. Regear, and lock the rear.

Personally I think it's how you drive how much wheeling you do the terrain you're in many factors come into play.

Personally, I think we all just have our own idea of what "beating the shit out of a Jeep" is and how "often" is really often.

Anything over 35s and lower than 4.88 on a d30 is 'asking for trouble' if you actually want to wheel your jeep. I wouldnt even consider locking a d30! I have destroyed my ring and pinion (4.56) with 35 inch tires and a relatively light 2 dr jk. I have seen d30s/d44s (same tubes) cut in half with 37s and 38s. With 37s you shouldnt be worried only about the gears or axleshafts but for the housing itself. I do not want to start something here but if you actually wheel your jeep this is my opinion.

I know a guy with a JK locked front Dana 30 on 35s that literally beats the shit out of his Jeep and in the two years of knowing him all he broke was a U-joint. Personally I think it's how you drive how much wheeling you do the terrain you're in many factors come into play. Especially your budget. It's not just tire size that's hard on axles. I have a Dana 30 and it's locked on 38s and I'm going to do everything in my power to keep it working . I have chromoly axle shafts but I use greasable U joints so they're weaker Works kind of like a fuse I also have them in the front drive shaft as well

You may learn that your ring and pinion, not the axle shaft u joint, is your fuse.

Any way, in case either fails, the trail repair (remove axle shafts and limp out in 2wd) is the same, and the cost of replacement parts is close. But the labor to replace the ring and pinion is a lot more burdensome than replacing a shaft.

Gears & Lockers

You mean I can’t throw a lunch box locker and 5:13 gears into a D30, slap on some 38s, and “beat the shit out of it” with no issues? I am shocked to hear that.
