Gear Pattern opinions

My 2nd gear swap, first one was 20 years ago and somehow got it near perfect on the first shot. This one has me scratching my head a little.

JK Dana 44 rear, 5:13 Revolution gears. .007 backlash with approximately the same carrier preload as factory setup, 15-20in/lb pinion preload.

.037 shim, seems shallow

.045 shim, seems deeper but drive goes further into the toe. Started with factory .052 shim and it was way towards toe/heel, no pics.

Advice appreciated…

Have you tried moving any of the carrier shims from one side to the other? Like .003 or .005.

Yes, I have moved them around to get the backlash into spec, .006-.010. Currently just a hair over .007 backlash.
Your pattern is really close. I'm just wondering if you moved it so that even if the backlash was slightly out of spec, then you could readjust the pinion depth to get the backlash back in spec and get a perfect pattern as well. Gears are a pain in the ass.

Definitely super close. Pinion shims make big changes using small amounts. So .037 to .045 is a big jump but, you are spot on with first too shallow and .45 looking a tad deep. Try taking out .003 to get closer to .042 and see what that does. Backlash is good.
That's what I was thinking. Had to stop working on it today and thought I would get opinions before I took it back apart again. Thanks
